We went out yesterday morning and I fished most of it between 50' out to 300' basically just below the line at Ledbetter (14nm south of WP). Not much sign at all. A little in places. 61.5* out deep, 56* on the beach inside of 100'. Marked quite a few salmon on the beach. Very little offshore but we caught some Coho out there. Had 10 bites, hooked 6, landed 4. Two Coho, two short chinook. Lost a nice 15lb chinook on a jump near the boat. Zero diver fish, all Downrigger. Only fished one rigger.

    Sunday, June 25th...

We went down there again today but started in on the beach this time, just below Ledbetter...fished better but no sign and only one bite. It was also foggy today so I couldn't see anything around me...not good for scouting an area solo. After two hours, we picked up and ran offshore to 200 fow and put them in. We still had the fog so finding any sign was basically blind luck. We trolled that for an hour out to about 250 fow, hooked and fought one decent Coho to the surface and it jumped and spit.

Anyway, the salmon thing wasn't really happening today so I slid over to a hard bottom spot and we had some of the best yellowtail Rockfish fishing you could ask for. A good trip all in all.

My friends out of ilwaco did pretty good today on nooks half way up the peninsula in 20-40 fow. Damn...so close.

    Thanks for the reports, Mark!

I'll add another data point or two: We were fishing a well known bottom fishing spot, about 15 miles W of Grays Harbor Saturday 6/24. Lots of commercial trollers working the area, and we saw them pull in a few salmon. Our boat did well on YTR and a few lings. One fish pulled much harder than the rest and I knew it was no rockfish. Got it to the boat and found a nice chinook of about 12 pounds had bit a shrimp fly. Go figure. We let it go so we can catch it next week!

Came back with many different species: yellowtail rockfish, lingcod, canary rockfish, black rockfish, petrale sole, dungeness crab, quillback rockfish, and a silver gray rockfish (according to the fish checker, who was pretty excited since he had never seen one outside of a lab).

Looking forward to a solid week in WP beginning July 1!!!

That's outstanding news Leif. What did you see as far as bird and bait life in that zone? Thanks

Mark, mostly the sounder was lit up with rockfish rather than bait, but there was a big group of shearwaters working much harder than we usually see them. Couldn't see what they were eating, but I wouldn't be surprised if salmon were dining off the same menu...
