Quick report. We put the wood to the Lingcod today.

“McGeyver” Dave came up from Sandy Eggo to fish with “Seahunter” Eric and me on one of our local Ling spots. Launched from Davy’s in LB and made our way out in the cold crisp December air. Didn’t start particularly early, so after jigging up some bait, it wasn’t until around 10:00 AM when we made our first drop.

Short story, they bit really well. In two hours, we hooked 20, landed 13, kept 4. Largest went 23.5 pounds by Eric, and the rest were 7 to 14 pounds.

    Thanks everyone!

Jim, we were fishing around 40 fathoms.

Stephen, you just need to put the time in to find some areas with good structure. The nastier the better. Lings like ledges, caves, crevasses, or anyplace else they can hide and ambush prey. If you're in Ling territory, you need to be prepared to lose some terminal tackle. Also, a good Ling area is usually void of clouds of small rockfish. And make sure you use baits big enough to keep Rockfish off your hooks. And while I can't divulge our favorite spots (that have taken years to find), here is something that I hope will help.

Here is a shot of the East End of Catalina. The area at the lower right is a rocky reef where we have gotten some Lings. Look for places like that.
