So your going to screw the crew? Save your silly math. I’m not sure if you’ve woke up but the price of living has gone up.The price of these trips have been going up because of the covid deal. However, the restrictions have been lifted but the boats are still running the " Limited Load " deal. Since the boats have adapted, so have I. I used to tip $40 on a trip that only cost $160 to $180 or so. Now I tip $10 on a trip that cost $240 and sometimes I don't tip at all. I bring my own food. I don't care if anyone criticizes me on this. If the boat owner isn't paying the deckhands a living wage, then that is the owners fault. Before covid, 55 passengers at $160=$8800, 35 passengers at $240= $8400. More passengers potentially means more tips, less passengers means less tips. Boat gets paid more with less passengers (less expenses). This only screws the crew!

That’s the JOB of a crew on a charter fishing boat. You must be a rock star and not need the crew to gaff your fish, chuck bait, clean the decks, clean the head, untangle your nest, etc. Sounds like you can do that all on your own. The crew supplies a service and should be tipped based on that service, not based on the price you paid for a ticket. They take care of you and you take care of them, that's how it works. The boat probably prefers you keep your $0-$10 ashore this season.
I was going to bring up the whole thing “when you go to a restaurant do you tip your waiter” but I somehow think cheep guy like you will still go around thinking you deserve it. Which is fine some people are just built different. It’s ok you’ll still get good service and “thank you’s” at the end of the trip but they know and the world knows your just one of thoseThat’s the JOB of a crew on a charter fishing boat

I have a small business and my costs have gone way up. Unfortunately I have a hard time changing more to my customers so I am making way less, just the way it is. I also own my own boat so I rarely fish sport boats anymore but when I do if I get good service it’s 18% to 20% for the crew. It’s about the experience. Last year I was on a boat that caught 4 fish and tipped 20%. I didn’t get one. The crew was amazing and worked their ass off. I don’t know any sportboat owners living in million dollar houses and driving a Ferrari lol they work hard and do their best. Everything cost more now so we just have to deal. If it’s too expensive then get a kayak or take up surf fishing. Owning your own bigger boat will cost way more per trip.
Nice job! Yeah I agree I'd rather pay more for limited load than be shoulder to shoulder on the rail. Part of the reason I don't fish weekends tooI fished the San Diego on Sunday and got lucky to land one of the seven fish that hit the deck. We stopped on plenty of fish, but they didn't stick to the boat well. Still had a good time and plan to make the trip down from LA again in a few weeks, regardless of how the fish counts look. There's just something rewarding about getting a cold water, yo-yo yellowtail.
My receipt said the base ticket price was $180, with the other $60 going to Mexican permit, biosphere bracelet, port fee, etc. Crew was cool and got a good tip. The boat didn't feel crowded with 34 people, and I highly prefer paying more for the limited loads we've had the last couple years.
thats all of so cal including the homes in the hoodFYI a million dollar home is actual average these days in San Diego.
That’s the sad thing. Pay a lot and can’t be safe and full homeless shitting everywhere.thats all of so cal including the homes in the hood
I know the homes are Expensive ,but when you Fry your Brain, and most likely burned every one they know inThat’s the sad thing. Pay a lot and can’t be safe and full homeless shitting everywhere.
The price of living has gone up which is exactly why some of us are going to pinch pennies on certain things. They're still making money whether or not a tip is given. So your going to screw the crew? Save your silly math. I’m not sure if you’ve woke up but the price of living has gone up.
That’s not the point, it’s the industry. They don’t make good money, Infact without tipping it’s not good at all -givin the hours and dealing with guys like you…The price of living has gone up which is exactly why some of us are going to pinch pennies on certain things. They're still making money whether or not a tip is given.
You're making assumptions about what those guys make.I do work for several boats, they're not hurting by any means. They like dealing with a guy like me or they wouldn't have me back.My point is all of this "things getting more expensive" bullshit is out of hand.If people need to cut back on costs by bringing their own food, tipping lighter or fishing less often then it is what it is.You spend your money and I'll spend mine. That’s not the point, it’s the industry. But no keep penny pinching when you go Sportfishing. That’s cool.
I’m not making assumptions. I know people in the biz.. What ever.. I’m sure they love the guy that doesn’t take care of them. You must be a real good stick. But you’re right, how you take care of your boat’s crew is none of my business. And I’m sorry to get involvedYou're making assumptions about what those guys make.I do work for several boats, they're not hurting by any means. They like dealing with a guy like me or they wouldn't have me back.My point is all of this "things getting more expensive" bullshit is out of hand.If people need to cut back on costs by bringing their own food, tipping lighter or fishing less often then it is what it is.You spend your money and I'll spend mine.

The San Diego is the most sold out full day boat too so they have the revenue to make these upgrades. They can also get loans for upgrades because their cash flow is strong so banks are more willing to give them a loan if needed.I think America is still a free market society, for now at least. Goods and services are worth what people are willing to pay for them. So long as the tickets continue to sell out (sometimes weeks ahead of time) then the ticket prices are in line. What I haven't seen anyone bring up is the huge cost of maintaining these 50+ year old boats, think six figures plus a year. The San Diego is probably the most well maintained boat I've been on, and constantly upgraded. Just my 2 cents, tight lines all and tip the damn crew![]()
