Hello there. I have recently embarked on a journey of being self-sustainable. I have an urban farm and am growing my own veggies, my own eggs, my own duck my own quail meat and my own rabbits. Yes, I am a girl - and yes, I plan to process my meat myself. I cannot think of any other way to be more respectful to the food I eat. While I am not a huge meat eater - the dogs, the cats and the roommates are. So, in addition to raising what I can on 1/10th to 1/8 an acre, I want to hunt and fish. I used to catfish every week in Idaho on the Snake River, but since I have moved to WA six years ago I have not had the pleasure. I want to fish for trout and cat. I'd love to do salmon, tuna and halibut but it is way beyond me this year and probably for quite a while. I want to trap crab and craw-fish (especially craw-fish). However, I am woefully without inspiration or teacher. Interested in taking on a 32 yr old girl who is really willing to learn and to try to negate her squeamishness? Not to mention buy the beer and cook the side dishes?

If not, do you know someone or somewhere I should try? Willing to travel Western WA and Northern OR - Arlington to Astoria, Seattle to Portland. Idaho - sometimes. My military family settled in Hagerman and Boise.

Welcome to Bloody Decks! Finding non-creepy types here will be hard work. Sounds like you're ready for that though. No boat mentioned in your bio... I'm sure you can hitch a ride from someone nearby. Shrimpin' starts in 2 weeks followed by halibut and ling cod. Best of luck.

oh dear... this is what I get for tossing the gauntlet, eh? :) Well, its not as bad as when I naively posted "Please do not use this doorway as a public restroom" in the window of the bookstore I worked at in Pike Place. That was... interesting... the next morning.

    Cass,
Probably 80% of what I know today as a fisherman came from being involved in a local group called the Puget Sound Anglers. Look up Gig Harbor PSA. We meet at the Tacoma Outboard Association on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. I have done more networking and fishing through this group than I ever could have imagined.
As the true saltwater season is just around the corner, you should get to one of these meetings, introduce yourself, and see what there is to be learned and shared.
    Welcome to the neighborhood!

    Cassandra,

Being the only gentleman amidst this group of convicts (in some cases-literally), I would like to warn you, and respond in the kindest, most respectful, and non-pornographic way I can...

BE FUCKING CAREFUL FOR WHAT YOU'RE ASKING FOR!!

You seem bright, and able to handle yourself with the verbal sparring, but I have witnessed a few grown men cry, due to the magnitude and sharpness of the barbs thrown... (Or they saw Charlie's avatar.) Just keep in mind that most, if not all of the members of this particular forum are teddy bears, trapped in the skin of a gorilla with A.D.D...

How far from the salt do you live? That might be a good place to start.

Plus, you should stay on top of the "Open Seats" thread on this forum. That's probably the best way to get instant gratification... (Uh...I'm not sure if that's a good way to phrase it with this crowd...)

Welcome to BD :finger: ! Since you mentioned going halibut and tuna fishing, have you ever been in the ocean? Do you get sea sick? It will make some just curl up in the corner and beg to be returned to dry land. Others get sick periodically (myself included) and then feel better and carry on. Others never even feel it slightly (talking about sea sickness Charlie).

You do know that when you catch your first tuna, you need to eat the heart while it is still beating! That will help you get in touch with your food and become one with it. Kind of like drinking a pint of deer blood when you make your first kill (Wolverines!).

How do you feel about burning all of the carbon emissions (fuel) to go 30-50 miles to fish the fishing grounds? Unless of course you wait a year or two and go on Bigger Fish's new sailboat.

I like the fact you are taking the time to see where your food comes from. Many people don't have a clue except the grocery store or a restaurant. Stay in touch on this board and as the season comes around, you'll find some rides.

    TT
