I need help choosing. I know that all avets from the 30 down to the sx are able to handle 50# duties. I own an sx, mxj2, jx2, hx, and 30 and 50sds, I love the open tops on these reels. I fish 20 and 25 on the sx with 50 spectra, 30 with 50 spec on the mxj, 40 with 65 on the jx, 60 with 80 spec on da hx, and the other ones are 100 plus pound duty reels. WHICH AVET do you use for 50# with what length rod, what technique(live bait, yo yo, surface iron, etc.), scenario, for which species, and why?
jx2, lx2, hx2, or possibly the narrow hx.

I use my JX6/3 or LX6/3 for 50# on a Calstar 700H. I've used these combos for both live bait, panga trolling in the Sea of Cortez and yoyoing for yellows.

HX for 50# Calstar 700H. I like tossing heavy iron Tady 4/0's Sumo's etc or bombs. Let it sink for a little and then wind like hell. Kind of halfway between surface iron and YO YO. Surface iron either the JX 30 lb 8ft stick or LX 40 lb 8 1/2 foot stick. All have proven effective for yellowtail etc at Cedros and other spots. If there are bigger fish around Yellow fin ( under 100 lbs) etc I tend to opt for the HX and the 7 ft rod. More drag, line strength, shorter rod mean its less likely that I will get my ass handed to me. If fish bigger than 100 lbs are around I tend to go to the bigger reels 30 and 50 class shorter rods 6 1/2 to 5 ft and bait. Most of my trips are on the big boats from San Diego 3 to 8 days in length. Local overnight to 2 days on smaller boats where the HX is my big stick if I even go that big. Depends on the trip.
