Got a few questions about my pics not being west coast long range .
That boat is the Yankee Capts out of key west Florida . The trip is 4 days they have 2,3,4,5 day trips. Has chef just like you guys but on a much smaller scale .. there are a few of us on this site who go on this boat as this is to my knowledge the closest thing to a Cali long range boat on the east coast.
Here’s a link to a show done on the boat .
140 miles northwest into the GOM from key west . We were fishing 200- 400 for for primarily multiple snappper species, multi grouper species dolphin and Blackfin Tuna. Occasional yellowfin. We often catch wahoo as well.
Here's one from a 14 day a few years ago on the RR3. After dropping off all but 3 guests and Andy in Cabo, we were supposed to head home with no stops as we were behind on time. Lures went out anyway, and the remaining crew and us had wide open Wahoo. Got bit on almost every cast, and at one point everybody was on a fish with nobody to gaff. I'll always remember the faces of the folks who flew home when we got to the docks, as only a few 'hoo had been caught on the trip.
283 & 298 back to back bites. On a fly line sardine and a greenie. Possible record brace for back to back bites into SD. 298 was the old Shogun boat yft record that got beat shortly after. Was handed the first Shogun 300# patch ever but I handed it back since the scale read 298. No doubt a 3 when it hit the deck. I want the patch back. Some boats had boat scales at that time
283. Toughest fish I have ever encountered. Just radical
298 kicked its fkn ass in under 30 min. The 283 was much stronger
Very long sickles. Loaner fish or living in a small pack for awhile. Sickles were not rubbing on other tunas. Which shortens the sickles in big tight schools. Plus genetics as some naturally have longer sickles then others
I did not pass my troll rotation up at Alijos this year. 4 troll rotations and zero fish for me just 1 short bite with rod in hand. I'm better off fishing the slide/drift. Troll cursed. But the people on the same troll rotation as me have greater odds because I won't get bit and land the fish
Pacific Voyager. Not long range but this is a bigeye tuna. Bigeye tuna are cool and mysterious. Normally hooked by surprise on albacore pee pee type gear. Making it a tough fight
