I took a ride on the Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina this past Sunday. We started out at the bait receiver, lots of big sardine, huge anchovies with some brown bait mixed in (queenfish/tomcod), later found out they has some live squid in the bottom they were saving if we ran into the grey ghosts. First stop was about a half mile in front of Palos Verde for barracuda but couldn’t find them so… we went rock fishing and hoping to run into some thing call a “Spanish Jack”, found out that what I used to call jack mackerel. Did alright not a banner day, I got two good sized bocacios , 4 larger sand dabs, 5 big sculpins and a “wtf”. I didn’t have any luck on the grumpies or the “Spanish Jacks”.
The current was really strong and there were a ton of weird looking jellyfish everywhere.

That was pretty much it.

Let me know if you know what this is please.

Definitely a midshipman. A sarcastic fringehead's mouth is enormous and extends almost to its gills. I've caught quite a few midshipmen in the Redondo/PV area and got my first SF off Santa Cruz last July. Those SFs are a trip! They make lingcod look...Earthly.

Awesome video: [ame]http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BjexNXJYblQ[/ame]

Either way, it looks like you can add a new species to your list of caught fish.

Have to agree, midshipman. Was gonna say kelp greenling but a little too round in shape. I caught a SF down in the sea of cortez between LaPaz and Loreto a few years back and played hell identifying it. Those things are ALL mouth.
Congrats on a decent day fishing. I sure hope all those jellies aren't from some long term cold water upwelling! Lots of life in the water this year so far tho, of all kinds and that's a good thing!

It's not a midshipman or a sarcastic fringehead; my best guess would be a crevice kelpfish (not good eating).

The jellies are probably Salps there are plenty of them out there right now- pretty harmless.

good fishin' = great day

m mcgourty,

Always interesting to add a new species to the catch list.
