Steve and I did a little inshore loop in his sled Sunday, 2-19. We fished between 20’ and 100’ for a tough, steady pick of mostly bass that were glued to the ocean floor in 55.5 degree water. There was a little uphill current and an east wind that lasted all day. The water was dirty, though probably not as bad as it’s gonna be after this monster blow and a couple inches of cold rain that are headed our way.
I got good intel that bass were plugged with chovies, so Steve brought some clone Snipers that a friend of his makes. Man, these things outfished our old standby JP jigs by a long shot. Well, Steve’s jig did. The identical one he gave me was covered in invisible fish repellant. I pretty much just watched Steve catch fish after fish. My poor thumb is wore out from clicking his fish. Bastard. 4” Kman Special swimbaits still caught most of the fish though.
We were done at 2 with 57 fish on the clicker. Sandies to 4#, calicos to 2#. Bycatch were a couple goats (one almost 3#), a Tomcod, and a cabezon. Everything was caught on the bottom. Find structure and drop a jig or swimbait on it. If no fish, hit the next structure. Repeat.
