Kept an eye on the forecast and got crews ready for the last Area 2 butt-stuff day of 2021. We had 8 on Feral and Slapshot had 5. Figured we’d get donuts at the crack of 700 and then head out. Well, the morning flat out sucked. Donut shop was closed with a sign reading that they can’t get employees. Oh well. We had a couple breakfast sammies from the Shop’n’Kart. We had some repeat friends on the boat, with the addition of Corey from Sportco, who was awesome to fish with and even tossed a couple new Sportco hats our way👍

So, we call to Norm to make like a baby and head out…. As I slide forward, the north wind has us pushed against the dock. No biggie, until the aft scupper cover caught something at the end of the pier and literally ripped the end board and metal tubing from the dock. SHIT. Erica looks back and sees SlapShot precariously close to the rocks. The north wind got him too. He turned a DF350 into a dual bladed Cuisinart. :(

We get the boats squared away and each assessed our situation. There wasn’t a mark on the Allied. I couldn’t believe it. Thank goodness for HD welded boats! SlapShot had some prop dings, but not that affected the motor. We headed out. Beautiful day. We ran through the south gap and followed them out to the ultra secret sand dab spot. So secret that only 4 sand dabs knew about it…. We had a blast running out together. That boat is a beast and fun to watch running!

After 30-40 minutes for only 1 dab, we spilt to the closure. SlapShot stayed and picked up 3.

The NE wind kicked up and we were actually in a quarter following sea, heading west!!!! A bit of a washing machine with the 4’ west swell. We still ran 25-30 mph, which is always a good day in the Pac NW. as we got to the closure, we got lined up with the other 4,379 boats out there 😂. There was another nice looking Allied out there, even though it was missing a sponson…

Corey, representing Sportco, hooked up quick with a nice canary and then again with a Boccaccio.

And then it died. We fished pipe jigs, lancers, mackerel, tuna bellies, and shad. It was scratch fishing. We picked up a couple more canaries. 7 lings, 2 butts, 5 sole, and 3 black cod.

Had a big dinner at Bennett’s and the. Hit the beach for clams. My first time clamming. Easy limits. Sure was a bitch trying to find the heart…

Slept in Saturday and then met at the Smith Shack. Fired up 6# of bacon, 5# of hash browns, and 2 dzn eggs on the big blackstone. Then we went to work cleaning the 180 clams.

Cleaning these clams is not as fun as I’m used to…

Got that mess all squared away and began prepping for Carrie’s and Erica’s bday dinner. Elk burgers with diced bacon mixed in, Canadian bacon, double cheese, and sautéed onions. DAAAYYYYUMMMMMMM.

After dinner, we headed back out to the beach and hammered our limits again.

An amazing weekend with some of the best horrible people around 😂. Westport is a good place!

I’m up for recipes for cooking clams, that doesn’t include frying them?

I run my clams through a meat grinder with the small plate
I like the consistency and size done this way, I also like to add a can or better yet fresh corn which adds a bit of crunch
i have always doubled this recipe for a limit of fifteen clams.
If you have a chamber sealer set it to 93% and package two cups per bag for a single serving. Freezes well for at least a year.

The ground clam thing is the only way to go for chowder as far as I'm concerned. Mom used to can them ground and then dump a quart jar juice and all into the pot.

I made a batch of chowder the other day using fresh ground clams. Since i'm still trying to drop some tonnage off my fat ass, down but stuck at 38 lbs lost I tried to make it low carb substituting potatoes with cauliflower. Fairly simple, chopped onion, bunch of fried bacon, heavy cream and a couple three bottles of clam juice. Recipe called for almond milk but that sounded yucky to me so just replaced it with the clam juice. It called for some garlic but I forgot to buy that. Regardless it was damn good with the cauliflower. I had it for breakfast the next day wishing there was enough left over for lunch. The secret to clam chowder is.....clams.

One other method if you don't mind the breaded clam thing. Do your normal breading, drizzle some butter on them cooking them under the broiler instead of deep frying. Once brown or golden flip, drizzle some more butter and back in the oven.

Yep, very good, or just pan fry them, with a mix of evoo & butter....kinda like crab cakes, but clam cakes...season and sauce of your choice.....way to reap the harvest of the great PNW....awesome trip and great report...
