One other boat in the area, sardines popping up everywhere and bird schools following them. Saw porpoise earlier in the am, then huge explosions under the birds. Fishing bass so heaviest setup I had was lexa 300 with 65lb braid to 40lb flouro. Slapped on an iron and chased the bird school, stopped upswell of the school, fast moving school. By the time I got to the front of the boat, fired a cast and 2 cranks in get my ass handed to me on the big stuff. School sinks out and never shows again. Get dogged in 80ft of water and end up chasing the fish with the boat. Plenty of runs and a few huge circles later, get her to the boat. Dad grabs the gaff and misses the biggest yellowtail I’ve ever seen. Fish swims back down bout 20 feet and back to square one, get him to the boat, another missed gaff and a yell at the top of my lungs, the fish hits the deck with a good ol neck shot. Nothing beats a PB yellow on your own boat in the middle of winter with your pops

Get out there and have fun, I don’t care what you have to say about my fish. There are plenty of fish in this ocean and you won’t know if you don’t go. It’s posted, deal with it

Awesome fish and story. If you had to get only one, couldn't have gotten a much better fish than that!

Those packs of hold over yt that come out of the canyon to eat suface fin bait. When the conditions are right. Is rad

Stoked you were there when it happened. Short lived surface action. I think the yellows are exercising and stretching out while keeping up on thier game. As most winter feed is deep and easy to eat

Same school type will chase bait onto dry sand at blacks beach. A few moments each winter
