Took the boat out for a local shake down trip and to catch some bass with my dad and his buddy. Launched around 6:30 and picked up some some nice anchovies, only a few dead all day. Headed out to an area we fish a lot and metered around until we found some kelp. A lot of life in the water and we started picking away at some bass. I was throwing a mc viejos 5 inch on a 3/4 oz warbaits head. The bass bite was steady but about an hour in I get bit on the sink and initially thought it was a big bass because I felt the weight but it was coming to the boat. Turns out it was just swimming right at me and as soon as it got up and down it dove straight down into the kelp. Takes me around the boat and into the anchor, had to let off some pressure to get it unwrapped from the anchor rope and by the time we did the fish had gotten deep in the kelp. Fortunately I had 50 braid to a short 40 pound floro topshot and was able to pull the fish out of the kelp. After that she came up pretty easily and my dad stuck the gaff in this beautiful local White Seabass.

Took her back to the harbor to get weighed and she ended up being 48.4 pounds. C2007163-B315-4B25-B130-121BD11D337E.jpeg

That's great man. Nice to have that heavier line, you never know!
I learned from my mistake last year. Similar situation, hooked something big, only had 20 pound and couldn’t stop the fish or get it out of the kelp and ended up losing it. Now I use nothing less than 40 when throwing any swim bait bigger than 3 inch.

Well done. Local fish in the Long Beach and Santa Monica area are always bigger for some reason.

Amazing catch

Congratulations on a well deserved fish. You were prepared when the opportunity happened. Fishing the 40lb Flouro gave you a chance to land that beauty.

What type Flouro were you using?

Thanks for sharing

I’d guess out of Dana and went north? I’m probably wrong but the backdrop looks familiar

Yeah, I recognize the coast too. Was just seeing if he was going to give up just a little detail. :)
