It's actually not out of the question at all! Where there are decent numbers of dorado, there could surely be blue marlin.......Stranger things have happened. I'm pretty certain it has happened here before.

If I recall correctly (I was a pinhead at the time), that crew boat turned sport boat called the Zaida got a big one off San Diego in the mid-late 80's, it was around 400-500#, there were a few others hooked that same season. It was one of those warm water seasons where the 1 day zone was absolutely plugged with skippies, and the blues were tearing it up. I think it was after the 83-84 mega el nino.

There was a pic and story in the Union Tribune or WON

    It was 1992.
Several blues were hooked, only one landed aboard a party boat [around 400 pounds].
I was aboard the Prowler and watched the fish being battled on another boat [MAYBE it was Cat Special??]; even jumping way out you could tell it was huge.
BD member AFdreamer also hooked one aboard his own boat that year. Fought the 400-plus pounder on multiple rigs for several hours, but lost the fish and at leastt one backup rod.
Hopefully he will post here with the entire phenomenal story.
The "official" state record for blues is over 600 pounds, from back in the 1930's.

Ive read about it. I believe it was weighed in at Avalon. Or maybe weight in Balboa but caught out near Catalina

I always wondered as a kid why my dad always had one MONSTER marlin lure in the spread when we went marlin fishing out of Dana. He always told me it was for the off chance no matter how unlikely that we rose a blue up. He always had faith it would happen. As a matter a fact he won a Striper tournament in cabo once catching the only Blue in the tournament. People argued it didn't count but it was a "marlin" tournament not a "striped marlin" tournament so he took first. What I would do to still have him around.

If some hillbilly from Washington State can catch a Dorado up in those waters, why would a Blue surprise you in So. Cal.???

I had a friend hook a black marlin on the banks below Ensenada. They were trolling for bigeye that were reportedly in the area. It spooled them in 5 minutes on a 30sw. Then the fish came up jumping 50' off the stern, his lure trailing from it. Absolutely certain it was a black. He's caught both blues and blacks before and he's a biologist with the IATTC at the SW fisheries center. Said the tail was 5' wide, tip-to-tip.

The CA blue marlin record is a 600+ lb fish that was weighed at Balboa back in like 1937.

I don't trust any party boat report without definitive photos. Too many googans who've never seen shit on those boats.

The blues are typically around when the skipjack tuna are in thick.

They work best when dipped in a mix of Zona Watermelon and cough medicine. Did he break your nose and bash your head into the sidewalk?
