Last night I hoop netted lobster for the first time. I launched my kayak from Doheny Beach, right next to the jetty, then paddled to the outside of the main breakwater. Using cut up, frozen mackerel I had caught from the same location in July, I baited and dropped my five nets just after sunset. I pulled the first net about a half hour later, and it was empty. That was a disappointing start. The second net had two shorts; the third had five; the fourth had 10 lobsters--all shorts. The action was fairly steady after that. I dropped and pulled each net 4-5 times over two hours, before the lobster had eaten all my bait. In the end, I had caught 94 bugs! Wow! However, only two of the lobster were legal keepers. There were maybe five that just barely missed the mark, and the rest were just too short. My question is: Is this ratio normal? Two legals to 92 shorts?
