Last night I hoop netted lobster for the first time. I launched my kayak from Doheny Beach, right next to the jetty, then paddled to the outside of the main breakwater. Using cut up, frozen mackerel I had caught from the same location in July, I baited and dropped my five nets just after sunset.

I pulled the first net about a half hour later, and it was empty. That was a disappointing start. The second net had two shorts; the third had five; the fourth had 10 lobsters--all shorts. The action was fairly steady after that. I dropped and pulled each net 4-5 times over two hours, before the lobster had eaten all my bait. In the end, I had caught 94 bugs! Wow!

However, only two of the lobster were legal keepers. There were maybe five that just barely missed the mark, and the rest were just too short.

My question is: Is this ratio normal? Two legals to 92 shorts?

Try a different spot or tide. I hit a spot last night and got 4 larger size legals and one short in my first set. Second set 1 legal and a few shorts. 3rd i got 20 shorts no legals. It's weird.

That's lobster fishing , ive hooped for 3 to 4 hours and caught over 200 shorts and get one legal , which when it was all said and done in the end i threw it back , same spot 3 days later we get 17 legals and 6 legals in one trap , the excitement of hearing the lobsters flapping in the trap is worth it alone , legals is just a bonus , ive been fishing the same spot for over 20 years , dont give up it'll happen one night , sea you on the water

That's a good night for the jetty. Remember, that spot is highly accessible, so it gets fished, literally, everyday for Bugs.

Doesn't sound that bad. Where there are small lobsters, there will be legals around, too. It's never an easy limit along the coast. Islands might be pretty easy in the first two weeks. But outside of that, it's all about spending the time and effort because the pressure is high between people going out every night and commercial guys setting hundreds of traps.

Just a limited resource with a lot of value. Similar to how there are often 30 boats every day next to San Clemente Island during BFT season.

It all depends on the location

I used to hoop the mission bay jetty and catch tons of shorts and rarely a legal

I hoop a spot in Catalina and have caught hundreds of legals and never a short

Real simple. DO NOT HOOP WHERE COMERCIAL LOBSTER POTS ARE. All the legals get caught in their gear that is there 24 / 7. Hoop areas closed to comercials. For example frontside of Catalina.
