I don't own a boat and go on the open boat parade so catching mackerel most likely is not an option. What do you use when there is only smaller bait or squid strips available?

Thanks

Bring your own fresh big mack filets, use a min 4/0 hook.... But you run the risk of catching sharks and or bull sculpin too.

X2 on bringing your own macs. Sand dabs are a close #2 for me. And you can always fillet a smaller rock fish too.

3. load up a big hook with 3 or 4 'dines.....if you can't work out any of the above.

BIG swimbaits work too. (Like those big SLUGS they use for the calicos)

You'd be surprised what will swallow a BIG sand dab. Got my biggest copper on a sand dab and a lot of our WSB coughed them up last year.

I love using the biggest sand dab you got. The bigger the bait the ....... the large bait weeds out the smaller fish.

There you go. I hope that answers your question. :D

I like live macs and the pre packaged baby octopus that i get from 99 Ranch. The best luck I have had was with live macs.

If you are on a party boat, and they on;t have live mac...try and make your own macs, and then send it down.

Swimbaits work as good as any natural bait, and in a lot of cases they'll outfish bait becaue you can cover a lot more ground. I've had 20 fish days using swimbaits. Will also get you some nicer grade rockcod. I throw them with a baitcaster and it's a lot of fun to have one hammer your bait on the retrieve.

Normally I am using 14 oz. sinker dropper loop style (sinker on the very bottom). Can I put a 7 or 8 inch white swim bait a couple of feet above the sinker ?
Should I keep the lead head ( 4 or 5 oz) in the swim bait or just a plain swim bait?

    Thanks for any input.
