Took the liberty out of fishermans landing on Wednesday 7/13/22
35 Anglers
-83 Yellowtail (7-27 lbs)
-40 Bonito (3-10 lbs)
-3 bluefin Tuna (40-50lbs)
-2 dorado
Fished 25 miles southeast of the Coronado islands. Got into the zone at about 9am.
First stop was the big bonito on a troll feather strike. Fish charged at the boat full steam. Anyone with a bait in the water was bit. We put 15 on the first stop. Shortly after we had our second stop with another 25 bonito.
Later in the day we located a large kelp that was holding yellowtail. We caught some great grade yellows . Drove back to the same kelp 4 different times and got yellows on every drift. Ended up with 83.
On the way home we spotted massive school of mixed yellowfin and bluefin on the surface crashing bait.
I grabbed a 40lb setup with 2/0 hook and lively sardine. Cast upwind and was bit within 30 seconds. Fish took me around the boat. Over and under the circus of lines. Deckhand put a gaff in it a few min later . Nice 40 pound bluefin. One of 3 landed.
One of best 5-5 trips I’ve been on. I ended with 5 yellowtail, 3 bonito and 1 bluefin.
Recommend 30lb setup with size 2 jhook.
I was fishing mono, no fluoro was needed, as the fish were not line shy at all.
