Took a buddy out on his first boat trip ever on the Liberty yesterday. I pre rigged everything the night before so we were able to rack the rods do a little debrief then take a nap until I heard enough boots shuffling around to get up.

Upon arrival we slowed things down just north of the tuna pens then worked our way to the south side of the pens. The Royal Star and Shogun looked like they were havin a pit stop there as well.

First stop was a fly lined tutorial for my bud. ( I fished, he watched) Same for the next stop. Third stop I told him he’s on his own while I stood and watched over him.

    Touch...

Fourth stop I found myself at the bow casting a JRI 4 in that mint/white/bronze color on a UC Del Mar 900 w/ Tranx HG 50# spectra to 40# fluoro couple casts upswell then on the second cast down swell I found a hungry fish. That’s one for the bag. Go...

Next stop occasionally watching my buddy deal with the frustrations of bait fishing as a new guy. I told him “We’ve all been there” I went 4 for 5 on bait fly lined 30# with a smaller hook. The rest came on that same JRI until I got lazy and didn’t retie pop went the jig. Byebyeee!

The whole day was like this touch and go style fishing. I think one stop we put on close to 70 fish.

I ended up putting on a 7x m/w for no love. Just a couple sniffers. Put on a JRI 3 m/w and bingo! They wanted it. I think that particular 7x was just a bad swimmer. It’s usually my goto jig.

I hooked and handed one to my friend on bait but he was adamant on catching his own from cast to kill. “Let’s do it!” I say. We both grab bait cast out mid stern work our way around the corner after about 3 minutes I tell him “ Wind up, let’s get a new bait” he replies “But he's still swimming really good” I look over and his reel is peeling off line FAST! I am like “That’s a fish dude!” I reach over reengage his reel then he was on. After a few minutes his first yellow was on the deck and the skunk was gone. Go...

That was our last stop for the day. On the way in we reminisced about what was learned. Bait selection being one of the biggest things. And really emphasizing on getting that bait away from the boat. Me and another passenger explained how on our first 3/4 day trips we never caught anything. He never quit put his rod down and surrendered like most would have after losing so many fish. Not even a hint of a bad attitude. Stoked for him...

Captain and crew were all awesome, food was great. Hats off to the Chef and professional deck dudes. The boat was in immaculate condition. Only gripe was the rod holders. They don’t like to hold rods as well as some of the other boats.

I ended up with more than I needed so some fish got donated here and there. Good trip and especially happy for my friend on his first fish. Anyhow they’re hungry guys... get out there and gettem!

Oh yea side note bait was good sized and there were what looked to be Tuna crabs floating around here and there on a couple stops. Go...

I was on the trip. I was up in the bow throwing lures. Got two and lost 3 along a/ jigs/ lures. Everything that folks have said about the Liberty is true and some. Awesome operation. And that wagyu burger was LEGIT.

Nice report!! Great job on the surface iron fish. Losing the jig sucks. Sounds like the jig was a winner!

Yea it’s all good. It’s my own darn fault. Makes it tough when the fish are flying in the corner easily within casting distance.:picknose:
