First trip of the year on my favorite 3/4 boat, the Liberty out of Fishermans Landing. Had been watching the counts all last week and was planning on going this Friday to fish the Coronados. Bought my ticket Monday and got turned into a BFT / YT trip. Counts looked good throughout the week and was hoping to hang a fish. Got to the landing early and found 46 of my new best friends also looking to do the same.

Skipper said most of the fish were sonar schools anywhere from 120' to 250', were ranging from anywhere between 25# to >100#, and we would primarily be fishing jigs. We headed out and made it to the grounds around 8:45am and located our first school pretty quick. No takers on the first stop. Second stop was about an hour and a half later. We had two hooked on Flat Falls early on the stop after heavy chumming. I saw a boil 5 minutes into the stop and immediately grabbed my 30# flyline set up and hung one on a loooooong soak with a hot belly hooked sardine. We ended with 3 on that stop. We stopped on a sonar mark shortly after loaded with jumbo that Bonito responded to the chum and had some fun playing around with them. The Bonito went from 5 to 10 pounds and were a blast, but not the target species. The next stop was another hour later on a sonar school down around 180' with a BFT hooked on a Flat Fall and another landed on a flylined sardine. At about 2pm we made another stop on sonar marks and picked 3 with 2 BFT caught on Flat Falls and the final BFT caught on a flylined sardine. Shortly after we found a bird school holding Bonito and hung a few more large Bonito. Again super fun but not the target species. We spent the rest of the late afternoon looking for tuna but we unsuccessful.

First off, Love the Liberty! Taro and his crew are awesome!
Secondly, the schoolie BFT are out there and are a little bit larger than last year at this time
Third, if you go out bring the heavy string just incase but have a lighter bait rig ready to go
Fourth, its only April and the Bluefin are in our backyard... I saw the Coronado Islands the entire trip

Hoping this year I hang my first triple digit fish, cant wait for the season to unfold! Good Luck to everyone going out in the near future and be ready to fish anything from 20# to 80# on a 3/4 day boat leaving from San Diego!

Despite the light load of 47, you managed to get a nice fish. Congrats!

Nice report. Once again Taro looks like he is working his butt off to be the first day boat to get into the cows good this season.

    Hey Matt.
Like your report. I’m curious if you’ve any idea how many fish was lost with 46 people. I thought 28 was a lot for us the day before and had to keep fishing at the bow. Glad you got one too.
