I got a call from Sushimi on Sunday saying "Let's go!". We have been fishing together for several years and our best fishing trips are usually "spur of the moment". We decided we wanted to sleep in, so we got a late start around 8:30. I kissed my wife and told her I wasn't coming back without fish....she rolled her eyes.

We knew the fishing had been bad and the water was dirty so we just decided to "Enjoy the Day".

Sometimes trips just seem to work out the way you would like them to. When we got to Nacho's we saw that he had live squid available. He said that he had just gotten it in within the hour so we considered ourself lucky to have decided to leave late.

Today was already looking good. The weather was beautiful.

The fishing was really not that bad. We started North of the L.A. Light and worked South, drifting on several waypoints along the way. We had a couple of spots that were very productive. Some spots we were able to catch calico bass. One spot produced a couple of Sheepshead. One spot held Whitefish. We laughed and kept saying..."Enjoy the Day" (our new motto.)....and best of all, when I arrived home with my wife waiting in the driveway with her hands on her hips, I was able to climb out of the cab of my truck with my head held high.

I have never been one to keep whitefish. I usually throw them back. I remember them being very bony and fishy. But Sam said that they're really not that bad...so I decided to keep one. As it turns out, they are actually pretty tasty. My wife dipped them in Panko and fried them in oil. We were both surprised at how good they tasted.

Thanks for a good report, you guys had the right attitude, without great expectations. You caught some nice fish, sounds like conditions are improving. Keep up the good work Croaker Stroker!

That whitefish is about the size of many of the yellowtail being tagged down here in San Diego.
And, yes, I think they're very tasty.

Very tasty fish. Not sure if you did, but try the panko with soda water instead of regular flat water - the batter fry's so much lighter and is noticeably better.

Daaamn! Thats a fine sized whitefish you got there. On first glance, I thought it was a small yellowtail too. Lol. If I was reeling that guy in, I might have even hollerd...Yellow!!! Of course the guys would poke fun at me for that the rest of the day, but Im known to get excited and yell out the fish I want it to be instead of the fish it usually is. Hahaha.

It's an Arima Sea Pacer. Made in Seattle. Now owned by Defiance. Same kind of boat as Brandon Hayward used until he sold it a few years ago.

Used Sea Pacers (open bow) are pretty rare. (Nobody wants to sell them) haha

You can see more pictures of them on arimaowners.com.

Thanks for changing your profile picture Croaker, As I said before you were scaring small children . . . and my girlfriend.

Sushimi needs longer arms for the picture opportunity. He's stretched out and that calico still looks small, worked for the beast of a Whitefish . . . bleck

Like the style of that boat, looks seaworthy; and a Furuno, ooooohhh myyyyyyyyyyy.

    Good post.
