Capt Gavin and the crew were great to fish with. Started fishing abt 6:30 am. Had a slow but steady bite on bluefin till about 3:30 when we headed for home. What worked, flat falls 160-200 gm. 50/60 lb line, 80 would have been better. Some hooked up on dines fished deep. Fish were anywhere from 150-350 deep. About 20 or so broke off iirc. We didn't get into any 20-30 lbers we were on 70-100+ . If you go take 25-80 rigs along with flouro as you don't know what you'll get into.
One guy got an Opah that went 110 ish

Just an FYI......some one asked around and it was established that if you were wearing green underwear you chances of hooking up increased dramatically. Bluefin....fussy bastards

Green underwear, got it! Do you know of any tackle shops that keep that in stock?

I have a pair of greenies that routinely gets overlooked. God as my witness, I'll wear em next time out and get a pic if I boat a good fish.

    Thanks for the great report!

Do you know why there were so many casualties?

    How many casualties were there?

How many guys actually landed a BF using less than 60 lb?

It is apparent that the reason why they did not land fish is because they did not wear green underwear. You know how it goes at the beginning of the season Billy everyone is not ready for the big boys and do not have the right gear.

I was on that trip too. The trophy bluefin will certainly exploit any weakness anywhere. Whether it's connector knots, drags not set properly, a slight nick in the line, rod/reel not beefy enough, or just plain biting through the heavier line after an hour or two fight, the hookup to landing ratio sucked.

I did not get a bite that trip, next trip not only will I be wearing the green underwear I will make sure it's designer underwear - either Owner or Gamatsu.

Looks like a cookie cutter shark punched holes in the Opah. Wounds like the same as in the wiki article on them.

Cookie cutter shark, That's what I figured had punched the holes. I guess the kids cartoon "Octonauts" is educational for my daughter. That's where I first heard of the cookie cutter shark.
