Guys, I need a recommendation on what lb test would be best for late August yellowfin tuna? Fishing Outer Banks out of H&M. I'm assuming the YFT running through in late August will be a bit larger then they are now.
I posted this in Fishing Chit Chat with no luck so I moved it.
    Thanks for your help fellas!

Why no one has touched it is because your asking a question that changes every day. Lately, the yft have been biting 15-50 lb test. Fluorocarbon helps in most cases. Every day is a new day and just check reports the week leading in to your trip. Good luck.

What test line you use has more to do with bait than fish size. If it is anchovies a 20lb outfit that can cast it 15 feet away from boat is good. Sardine a 30 to 40lb out fit with 25 and 30 lb flouro leader about 3 feet is good. Don't make the leader too long knot needs to clear top guide before you cast. Bring all 3 of these outfits and you should be good. Having a rigged backup outfit ready to go is great. If you get in a tangle while not on a fish yourself free, make sure you cut your line and grab back up so you don' waste time re-tieing. If you can get on another boat right away while the bite is hot get some practice in for the late August trip.

Came back from a trip on Friday, and most people shifted to 20-25# outfits for the live bait that we had. I still got bit on 30#, but not as much as some of the other guys. When the bait got low, I had a jig on 50# fluoro and got bit on that as well.

If you have enough outfits, bring a 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50. This way you are covered. If you have to double up on any one lb test, bring two 25's. The 50 is a
Must in case you get into the 60+lb bluefin. And bring size 4 to 5/0 hooks. Bait is anywhere from pinhead anchovies to Big Macs. Agree with others that line you will use also depends on bait size. Fluorocarbon will get more bites. 3-4 Ft leader. Good luck out there.
