I arrived on Sunday. Details of the drive down for those making a drive into Baja follows:
* The 5, once you get out of Mexicali, is a 9.5/10. I think I only saw one pothole the entire way to Hwy 1 at Chapala. No washouts or detours. The vados between S. Filipe and Puertocitos don't seem as severe as in the past; this is the slowest stretch to the 1. I attempted to pre-purchase our FMMs on line but I gave up in frustration. We went inside the building at the border crossing (stay in the far left lane). There was no line. Have cash in dollars or pesos. Quick and EZ. If you need to declare items for importation, the same building but different counter.
* The hwy 1 south to G. Negro deteriorates and is rough about the last 75-100 miles. It is perhaps the narrowest stretch as well. We got a hotel room and grabbed some dinner.
* Hwy 1 from G. Negro to La Paz is in pretty good condition. I recall one short detour down on the shoulder. No pavement concerns to Santa Rosalia. The road through S. Rosalia is fresh asphalt. After the climb out of Lorreto and on the down hill towards Insurgentes, the road bed isn't too smooth although the asphalt is in good shape.
No fishing report yet. The wind has been fierce with the port being closed all week thus far. I plan to get out this weekend with a favorable forecast.
