Fished from 8-1pm turning north out of mission bay we worked our way to the NW corner fishing rockpiles and meter marks from 120-180ft using 2-4 oz leadheads with 7" flukes and flat falls. A few spots were just south of the mlpa but the better spots were north of it. The water was 62.8 with fin bait everywhere, a fair amount of micro bait and pockets of red crab. Our total was a few rockfish, a 26" lingcod, 7 sandbass, 12 calico (one est. 8lbs no pic since it was bleeding) and a 45" 37lb halibut that ended the day nicely since we had nowhere to put her.

Nice report thanks for sharing. Question about the 2-4 oz lead heads with 7” flukes? How were you fishing them on the bottom, swimming or was it a bite they would hit on the fall? Any pics of the setup as I’ve never seen that rig before. Thanks!

I mainly use them when I see suspended fish, most bites are on the fall but I swim and hop it on the bottom if it's slow or the fish are tight to structure.

How do you fish the flat fall for halibut? That’s a new one for me.
Luck, the hali was a bycatch. After 5 bass in a row on the flatfall my buddy begged me for one so I handed him my rod to dig one out of my box and he drops down asking how are you working it? I tell him slow lifts retouching bottom between sweeps and 10 seconds later he says "I got a real fish"

Thanks it hit a 80g flatfall, I dumped 2 others at the same spot last week so it was nice to make good on this one.
maybe switch the stock treble for a larger one. Those 80g have some small hooks. Just a thought. One to two sizes bigger SS mustad stinger shouldn’t mess the action up

Those 80g models work well in fresh water for striped bass and largemouth too. Fished pretty much the same way bouncing the bottom.

I switched the stock assist hooks out but left them the same size I'll have to try the mustad ss stingers next time since it was skin hooked. Are they thinner the same gauge as the stock hooks?
The 2 I dumped were on the fluke, hook was probably to thick to penetrate that hard jaw and popped out after the right head shake is my guess? Again thanks for the tip.

Damn a hali on the flat fall! Those things will catch everything I guess.
