Can anyone vouch for Captain Rusty Spencer of the Kuualoa Kai in Haleiwa? Was thinking about booking a day with them in late april-early may. Any info or other refferalls would be great. Thanks all.

Good fishermen and friendly, but not luxurious. I love to charter them with my hardcore fishing buddies, but not my wife and little kids. You are in for a long hard day of fishing, which is great if you like fishing. Priced right for the market.

Not sure why first reply did not post so here it is again. This guy is a total looser and bad for the sport. He keeps everything he catches including all the babies, puts nothing back for next time. He once followed me around Kaena point for several hours as we caught and released three small (guessing all under 300lbs) marlin. He got so close in his desperation he almost ran over my lines several times. I had to take evasive action while trying to shake those fish off. We were able to free spool the drag on one but the other two wouldn't shake free so we had to reel them up to get the hooks out. All while this dummy was trying to run our lines over. I would have otherwise lost lost several hundred dollars worth of line and lures to this bone head. I reported his stupid behavior to the USCG. Of course this was made more difficult by the lack of a state registration number. I believe the boat is Federally documented so an "HA" number is not required. My guess is he probably did this to make it harder to report his reckless boat driving since you now have to be able to read the name of the boat from the transom. We ended up with an Ahi along with a couple small Mahi while he posted one baby Aku that day. People like this ruin it for everyone and also take a lot of the fun out of the sport. Find someone else to charter with.

    Matt,
Go to the Foxy Lady (Chupu charters) website, Jesse is recommending H2O adventures; that has to be a pretty strong vote of confidence. Now maybe H2O adventures has bought their charter license; I don't know. Making some assumptions here.
