Headed to Kona the 1st week of Oct. Never been so I'm stoked to go fishing. Anyone have any recommendations or warnings about the islands charter services? Not sure where I'm staying, but have rental car, will travel. Looking for Mahi or bigger tuna than Albies. Marlin would be a dream. Not bringing any gear so the service needs to provide gear and tackle. Any help and or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Northern Lights with Captain Kevin Nakamaru and Ihu Nui with McGrew Rice are two very good choices IMO. I have gone out on both and done well. Both have websites.

You can fish with Russ on the Lepika for a full day for what most charge for a 1/2. He is a master at the greenstick for big ahis and catches and the last time we fished with him in July we caught 2 blue marlin and a nice spearfish to take home for dinner.

    Kevin,

Most of the boats/captains here are pretty good. I used to help my friend with his charter business but he retired. I noticed you are located at Dopoe Bay. Be ready for a big difference. There's a reason why the Pacific Ocean here has the nick name "Lake Kona." Guys freak out when they see the Captain put out the lines right outside of the harbors, but, that's because the water gets deep really fast. I've seen vids of Depoe Bay so you've got my respect. How long are you staying here?

Not sure if you've made your decision yet, but Captain Jeff is well known and respected in Kona. Kona Hawaii fishing with Capt. Jeff Rogers - Hawaii sport fishing
He has 2 types. One is just him and you and your party act as the crew. It keeps everyone involved and it's a lot of fun. The other is he brings a deck hand. Capt. Jeff is well know for the action. He'll put you into jigging where everyone handles a rod and will hook up ulua, kohala, and potentially sharks. It's much more catching than just dragging skirts around the ocean. If you want to drink and enjoy the Kona coast, that is possible too, but if you want to fish, get your hands dirty so to speak, give Capt. Jeff a call. His rates don't include gas or a tip, but a 3/4 day charter is very resonable.

With regards to where to stay, the King Kamahameha was just overhauled and the rates are much more reasonable than the big resorts (Waikaloa, Hualalai, Mauna Lani, etc.). And it's 10 minutes to Honokohau harbor where all the charts go out from.

    Have fun.

Captain Scott Kadooka is a personal friend of mine, from preschool days. Runs the Terminator, a 46' Post. He also uses a greenstick, and has been coming in with an average of 2 ahi a day, at 140+ pounds for the past two weeks. If you're interested in just talking story with him about a charter you can call him at (808)938-1367.
