Aren't KITE FISH not Jackpot eligible? Or varies by boat/trip?
They did say at the pre talk that kite fish were eligible for the jackpot. This particular fish was a close second place. The jackpot was never an issue. It was just the fact that I have never been drawn for the kite and would like that experience.

Hell I would too like a kite turn. I wondered if that was an issue. LOL

All the people saying that you should stop fishing after you get your limits have clearly never fished in San Diego / on a sport boat... especially for BF. These people are commenting on something they have no knowledge of. Many many many times I have been on both side, where I keep fishing and give fish to other anglers at the dock or hand off. Also I have been on the opposite side of the spectrum where I am having a shitty day and get handed fish or get fish because other hotter anglers have caught more. I would much rather go home with fish even if I didnt catch one than go home empty handed. LOL whoever said that above is a moron. HMMMMM should I go to the store after I spent $500 on a trip to buy more fish or take a free one that is fresh that a hot hand caught.

Yep. Its the way of the future generation unfortunately. Personally, if the guy wants to give to charity...good in him. But removing him from the opportunity because of his previous success??? Sounds a bit like socialism to me.

It is embarrassing watching two thirds of the guys slamming their winch to the rail and letting the boat fight the fish. When you get your picture taken put an asterisk in the upper corner so we know the real story. If you let the deckhand pull line while you reel put another asterisk next to the first one. If someone hooked it for you put another one up there.

I hope it's ok to tell you I dont give a fuck if I have 100 * by my name. I come from a commercial fishing background which means loading the boat by all legal means necessary. Meat fishing is meat fishing. When you jump on a boat going for BFT, you are meat fishing. When you load your reel full of 80lb test you are meat fishing. If I could use electric reels or hydraulic equipment legally to boat a fish, I would use it. I honestly dont give a rats flying fuck how many stars i got by my name....respectfully saying...

Additionally, as a sport fisherman, I eat my catch and i'm a snob about quality. I dont give it away, I dont catch more than my immediate family can consume but I will boat those bitches by any legal means necessary.

I honestly know you and two thirds of you don’t give a rats flying fuck how many stars you got by your names, you wear them like metals. Commercial fishing and sport fishing are two different animals.

Holy crap..... next its gonna be....

Liberal Tuna..... eats like he doesn't have to pay.

Conservative Tuna.... owns the bait receiver.

"Caseyd..." its okay to leave the personal politics and your own choosen "religion " out of BD posts. We've seen enough of that here on BD.. and are working to keep our community amicably together. Its okay on a "politically dedicated" post.... but a political "drive-by" like above?

Personally I believe Brother.... we all agree on 95% of most matters of consequence. The remaining 5% .... is up to you. Dont push the "hot button" on a fine thread like this one.... for fun. Just saying...

Kind of a dumb analogy don't you think ? If i had four and was up for the kite i think i'd pass and let somebody else get their monies worth out of their trip.Trump supporter out.

Sport boat kite fish: you did absolutely no work to get that fish, other than getting the rod handed to you and winching it in with a deckhand giving you a back rub while you're in low gear. It's laughable to even consider a BFT caught in this manner as a "PB" fish.

I’ll post a brief report but mainly would like opinions on the handling of the kite rod on this particular trip.
Left the docks on this recent day and a half trip and we were fishing by midnight. I’m not going to mention the boat name because while I’m not happy about the handling of the kite rod, the trip was overall great. By 4:30 am I had four fish. Three over 100 lbs and one 40 lbs. All four were on a 300 gm zebra glow flat fall, 100 lb braid and 80 lb top shot. By 5:00 am the boat had about 15 fish and some of the others were on the zebra glow also. It was definitely the hot jig of tinge morning. Slow fishing continued through out the day with a mixture of sinker rigs, colt snipers and fly lined bait. A few more were caught on flat falls after dark.

Now my kite rod question. My number was drawn on the third kite fish. I was beyond stoked. Never had been drawn before. When I approached to take the rod they said no, you already have caught four fish. I honestly thought that they were joking until they called out a different number. I watched as they brought in a 170 lb fish. Much larger than my personal best of 116 lbs. Am I being selfish in thinking that fish was rightfully mine? Or am I being greedy after having a successful morning. Look forward to everyone’s opinions.
I don't think you are being selfish at all. I go fishing to catch fish, not take home fish. I have spent 50 years learning the craft of my obsession and spent hundreds of thousands in the process.

I see all the time guys who couldn't catch the clap in a whorehouse get handed a kite fish after they slept, drank beer, didn't want to learn a thing by watching others successfully catching fish. 5 minutes into the fight, they hand the deck hands the rod and the deckhands finish the fish. I call B.S. on this.

I guess if you want a chance to catch the bigger grade fish only being caught on the kite, you should just stay in your Bunk until they break out the kite. This way you stay within the rules, but also take the chance of not getting your number called and going home with nothing. I don't know how this is going to help Captains get there counts up when the hot sticks wants a shot at a supercow in October, but it's their operation.

I have never been on a boat that hasn’t fished for boat limits. Like it or not that is how these boats operate. We were way short of boat limits so it would not have affected your rail time. Also I gave all of my fish away to three very happy anglers.
I know better than to jump in here. LOL. We fish Salmon here in N. Cal, so next week Tuna trip is our first. On the Salmon trips the limit is two and basically when we bag two we crack a beer and open up the rail for others to have a little more room. That's the behavior I'm used to - there are some that don't but most seem to bag two and then chill. Our boats up here are packed and less bodies at the rail is always better.

That said, especially when the bite is soft and mooching is the technique - the boat will often call for more rods on the rail to help other people catch and/or limit.

I saw the comparison to hunting tags here and I get that. I would agree with that poster's position if we were drawing/buying fish tags in advance - but we are not. It's almost a good argument but fails (IMHO) to be valid in fishing. I could be wrong, but it's my opinion.

So I myself with limits would have chilled and passed on the kite or more fishing - unless I'm called to the rail by the boat to help others. My opinion is it is a boat policy matter and if it's leveled fairly then it's fair. If not then pick another boat next time.

No I don't think you were greedy. When we are at limits and called up to help limit the boat we always have the option of selecting what two fish we caught we keep. That's the part of the purpose of going back to the rail.

No bragging. Anyone can have a lucky day. I stated at the beginning it would be a brief report and my main reason to post was my question on the kite.

You were (are) greedy. I would've have given up my kite rotation until EVERYBODY has got a fish. By that time I would probably hook and handed several more.

I've been on long range trips scratching for wahoo. Towards the end the troll teams were thrown out and the only people trolling were anglers that didn't have any wahoo. Nobody whined or complained. I just had to catch more when we got stopped. But...to each his own.
This has been my experience on every trip over the last 21 years (yep I’m still a newbie). On one trip I had landed 7 Wahoo in one day (epic) then realized that the deckhands, captain and fishless companions were looking at me like a greedy MF and started to feel like a jack ass.

Charity should be up to the giver.... Not the recipient or others. You had an epic day...good on you! Enjoy it. Who cares what the others think?! Since when is being prepared, skilled, lucky, and successful something to be ashamed of? Charity, though, will insure future success.
