After a great birthday in San Quintin Capt Juan SQ, Rosarito Jimmy, Capt Adam SD and myself headed off to Gonzaga via Laguna Chapala.

The dirt road from Mex 1 to Gonzaga is about the same as it was last May but lots of work being done and projection for completion is 2017.

Stayed at Alfonsinas. Yes rooms are $100 a day for a double. Yes they have AC. No the AC was not on when I was there but high temps only in the 80s and great breeze at night so all good. Yes the rooms have a great view of the beach, bay and islands. Yes they have Internet and no I didn't post pics or report while there because....well, I was just having too much fun and couldn't seem to find time. Yes they have a restaurant and bar. Yes it is pricey and the menu is limited but the bar is well stocked and I enjoyed every penny that I spent there. Yes I met the owner, Joquin and he was a very nice guy that extended great hospitality. Based on my travels up and down Baja and especially based on the remote location I thought it was great and will be happy to stay there again. Here is the view from my room.
    image.jpeg

Weather was 80s in the day and 70s at night. Sea was flat calm. Couldn't ask for much more from Mother Nature. The day I left it was 100 degrees so I think we got a lucky window.

Capt Juan and Jimmy fished on their Gregor "Tin Can" that they towed down.
    image.jpeg

Adam and I fished with Capt Jusus "Pollo" Garcia on day one and two. Day three Adam bailed for home and my friends Enrique and Ramon from TJ joined me on Jesus' boat along with his uncle Jesus AKA "Guero". Jesus speaks virtually no English so Spanish is a necessity. He is a commercial scallop diver so very familiar with the area from San Filipe to BOLA and knows where the fish are from seeing them while diving. They run out of Alfonsinas and are just getting started on sportfishing. Not real experienced at it but if you tell him what fish you want he knows where to go. He will get you there but you will need all the gear and techniques. No fishfinder or gps. Old panga with tiller outboard. Straight old school fishing. You can send him a message on What's App.

    Ok on to the fishing...

5/10...Day one headed south. Casted for four hours for cabrilla without a sniff then at 11:30 like a light switch it turned on. The bite went wide open for about an hour an a half and we got cabrilla, grouper, yellowtail and Sierra casting jigs along the shoreline. It was a fish a cast and doubles were common. At 1:00 it shut off and not another bite for the day. Here is the biggest cabrilla of the trip. It tipped the scale at 11 kilos, my biggest ever. Check out Capt A hooked up in the back ground.

5/11...Day two went back south to the same spot for not much action but did manage a couple nice cabrilla. There were a lot of birds working a little offshore so we started fishing them and got some small yellows, big Sierra and lots of Bonita.

5/12...Day three decided to go north for grouper. We got some grouper and also yellowtail, cabrilla, White Sea bass and Bonita. Also saw some very aggressive mako and hammerhead sharks.

Just below Gonzaga there is a really cool lagoon that you can take a boat into so...we did. Tide was coming in and water was flowing like a river into the mouth. First shot is looking out from inside the lagoon toward the sea. Second shot is approaching the mouth as we we were leaving. Third shot is in the mouth as we were exiting. Check out the ripping water.

All in all another great Baja adventure. Old friends, new friends, good food, cold beer and even some fish.

Couple more shots just for fun

That's all the photos that I had on my phone. I'll post more from Adam and Capt Juan please add more pics and a story or two :)

Where north and how far off shore were you guys at? I plan on yak fishing just North of Gonzaga in the Punta Bufeo area, but would like to stay as far away from the aggressive Mako's and Hammerheads as possible.
My zone is usually a mile or 2 from shore but one day last June I had 2 separate encounters w great whites cruising right by me. One was a juvy 9 footer and one was 12+. After seen the second one I took it as a sign to get the hell off the water immediately.

Also thanks for the report! I usually fish krocs there as they generally work pretty well but Im def gonna pick me up a few new jigs for this trip.

Robert, we were way offshore but we saw several sharks the days we fished the coast. They just were not as aggressive.

Crocodile worked just fine too. I got cabrilla, yellowtail, Sierra and Bonita on them.

Curtis, the road is paved and the whale sharks are there now!!
