I tried doing a search but couldn't find my answers.

So what do you guys recommend for slinging surface irons on a Saltiga 30T with spectra and a short 40# topshot for local island yellows?

old school glass or the newer glass/graphite composites?

50 or 65# spectra? Does one cast better?

would it fit on a 90J?

side note: Hate those Diawa rod clamps...anyone use cork puppies? which size is needed for the 90J?

Your boat!
Go look at a Phenix Black Diamond PSW909H, 20-40, with the reel seat.
I personally hate those deckhand style rods! Build my own always with a reel seat.

Does that Phenix have a nice whip action to it or is it kinda stiff? I have a couple of Phenix rods and I must say, I am not a fan of those alps reel seats. They tend to loosen. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

I would recommend a good knife to cut backlashes out of the spectra. IMO anyone who fishes straight spectra when fishing the surface iron is a donkey, and should be banned from the bow. I fish 120 yard topshot of 40lb mono backed by 65lb spectra on a 30t. I fish it on a GG90J.

How do you like that GG90J....is it more stiff than the glass rod of old?
Does the saltiga clamp fit on the rod?
Which brand of Mono do you use for that topshot?

It's a saltist not a saltiga and I made it fit.....It is stiffer then the glass rod. Tough to throw stuff lighter then a 45, I mainly fish the 7x on it. I use clear Izor for all my jig fishing.

Hee Haw Hee Haw! Use 80# braid, its the same diameter as 20# mono and is less likely to dig into itself, I tie about 5' of 40# flouro which is just outside the tip. The production Phenix BD PSW909H come with Fuji reel seats, its not whippy but its a lot slower than a Calstar.
I use the Saltist 40.

My 90J has one layer of cork tape, & a 6" long pc of shrink tube. The medium size cork puppy fits it just right over the cork & shrink tubing.

Good luck
