Chuck, PM me your email and I'll forward the paperwork package that they email after you get thru (took me a couple of days......I guess they are/were inundated).

Sorry Jas, but I'm positive for 3 items on the list of "absolute contra-indications" for donating. 1 of them I could and would correct if I didn't have the other 2..........

Kinda confused by the topic headline.

I went to a kidney transplant orientation about 6 months ago at UCLA. At the orientation they mentioned the wait time and said that while the waiting time is long in Southern California, it is much shorter elsewhere. They specifically mentioned UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. I don't know if it's a possibility, but you may want to investigate.

I wish you the very best.

Yeah the orientation in San Diego said that it's 4-7 years in line. They also mentioned that I could try to get on other lists as well but would have to pay out of pocket for all the tests to be done to get on the list in another area and hospital. They wanted me to stay within 6 hours of the areas of the lists.
I'm hoping to skip all that and find a living donor instead of a cadaver just for longevity of the transplant and the time.
One of the advantages of SCRIPPS is they are one of the only transplant hospitals that do not use steroids. I met people from all over the US coming to get transplants there because of it.
Are you on the list too?

Hi Jason. No, I'm not on a transplant list. I went to the orientation for my brother, who had a double lung transplant 14 years ago. With all the meds he's taken over the years, he developed kidney disease. Given the waiting list length of time and his kidney function, his doctors wanted to act at the first sign of his needing a kidney transplant, so he would get on the list as soon as possible.

When my bother needed the lung transplant, we quickly learned that you can't be passive about anything in the transplant system. You need to understand how it works and there are subtle things that can foul things up..You really do have to ask questions, listen to the answers and pay particular attention to making sure everything is getting done that needs to be done. Really work with your transplant coordinator.

I hope you find a compatible donor. Make sure everyone knows that while it would be great if you found someone that's a match, that's not the only path to a kidney for you. Non-match people can still donate and then someone else's organ is made available to you. Basically, they match potential donors with potential recipients and then trade. That way, two people needing a transplant get taken care of at the same time. It's actually a great system for increasing the number of available organs.

I wish you the very, very best. Hang in there!

Jason, I'm very sorry to hear of your situation, I'm at a loss for words. Stay positive and I hope you find a donor soon.
