Great day fishing sand bass. Best sandbass bite I have had in years. We may have released more than 30. we kept 15 sand bass and 1 sculpin. Sand bass anywhere from 12” roughly 1 lb to 3 or 4 lbs. the wind and wind waves were worse than I expected and by about noon there was no one fishing the area. What worked was tube bait in the 30-60 ft zone. What didn’t work was heavy lures or lures on the bottom. We even had a triple today. I fished light 8lb test. Squid tipped jigs out fished everything. At one point a lead head with squid was getting bite but I still opted to add a tube to increase the frequency of the bites. Calico hunter color worked well along with mint green in a 3 inch size bait. The larger baits still got bites but not with the same frequency as the smaller tube baits. Smaller tubes with lighter heads appeared to work better when on the anchor. Sorry no pictures too busy catching fish.

I really wish they have size or reduce the limit to 5 for sand bass. Its been a long time since we have good numbers and it would be a shame if we have to wait for another 10 years if the local cattle and private boats wipe them out again. Its great to see the quantity and quality of these fish this year. We often release or keep just 1 or 2 because the of the muddy taste.

I kept four, and gave them to a buddy. He said they were great. Mostly catch a release for my part, but my fishing buddies taxed them a bit heavier! We did good on the rockfish earlier that day. I'm with cha, if you kill them all now we will not have anyone to play with! They are nice size fish, a limit of 5 would be good. Getting rid of the gill nets would be better!

I think that bag limits should reduce and slot limits for size would help too, nothing under 12”, nothing over 15”, that way the big ones get a chance to spawn

Sounds like a fun time bassin. Glad you had a fun time at Izors.
Seen some photos of some PHAT sandies, reminds me of
fishing the flats for years way back when. Good to see the Sandies rebounding again.

It wasn’t the Party Boats that got them, it was an influx of Giant Squid during their spawn that wiped them out. We are just now starting to pick up larger Sand Bass in Newport Harbor after years of nothing but Spotties and Calicos.
