As the season winds down the chances for big scores get smaller and smaller but its not quite over yet. Me and my buddy Jacob sent out of Newport at first light and made our way towards the 277/152 area in search of kelp paddies, birds, or any signs of life. We got to the grounds at about 7AM and there was no shortage of kelp patties. we checked about 5-6 kelps before we found one that was LOADED with dorado. to our surprise the were 100% lock jaw. We hopped around a few other paddies and the story continued, loads of dorado, none willing to eat.
We came up to one paddy and noticed a huge ball of anchovies underneath it and a few minutes later the dorado erupted on the bait and started foaming. we were able to stick three fish on micro-jigs and very light line (15lb test). They wanted nothing to do with the live sardine and After that fizzed out we were back to square one.
As we were running in between paddies we saw some dolphin jumping in the distance and figured it was worth checking for some tuna. This pod was loaded with yellowfin but they were super boat shy. We were able to hook and kill one 30LB fish and were forced to watch the tuna jump with the dolphin in peace, knowing they wouldn't let us get close.
