Shit if they’re charging 25 for cutting yellowtail, I wonder how much the burgers are.

Good point. Pad it a little on a bad day of fishing.

Sounds like a few guys who posed as Deck Apes may have been paid with a day of fishing as long as they helped. There's an advantage when going out regularly on the cattle boats in regard to catching. When i can have a shot at fish, what do I care about what everyone else is doing? Get your own. What can you say, 3/4 day trip has no expectations. Could have been Groupon.

I firmly believe that on any overnight trip we should not see the Staff fishing until anglers start to sit down and it's Wide.

I often wonder how long it takes for the parties involved to be alerted by someone perusing the boards.

They gotta be too tired from working their asses off to spend much time online, right?

Since I have been on that boat on twilight trips where a deadhead pulled out a fish that was not even caught on the trip to win the jackpot and give it to the crew, I think its business as usual.

I was fishing at pacific dawn last year. After we have our limited yellowfin all the skipjack you want. Everyone was tired only me playing with the fish.
Time for the deckhand to have a little fun. They using pole for tuna.

Once everybody else has their limit, I have no issue with it.

If the boat was out of daveys locker and started with an F it makes me think of the freelance, now the freelance is a super packed boat, last trip i did with them i caught 5 fish due to all the tangles and newbies that were on board, but i have never seen the crew selling fish at the end of the trips, and i went on multiple trips with them, it could be possible but i think it was on another boat

Good hint on the jackpot though, i never get in those things due to the same reason, someone pulls out a fish that wasnt caught on that trip just to get the money lol

Well with all the posts and no response from the OP he must work for another boat, is just the troll of the year or is probably such a big pussy you could park the charter boat he went on right past his labia.

Hes been a member since 2008...doubt he would risk his reputation on this post, .maybe his experience was like mine, and gave up on ever riding any boats north of mission bay?

If you feel something isn’t right then talk to the skipper or contact the owner of the company. If you felt like a man you also could confront the deckhand. Everyone makes mistakes in their lives and learn from them differently. Sometimes bringing awareness to the person would be plenty. I’m not a cop though.

This is the problem with the internet these days, as a young kid we learned how to not get caught doing shit like this! never sell fish outright though, just silly. Some passengers are more than happy to tip you 25 bucks to clean your yellow for them though...

we had regulars that would fish 4-5 days a week. they would always donate their fish at the end of the day so we could round out peoples limits if they got them cleaned. the only crew members that ever fished were the captain and galley cook (sometimes). but not if fish needed to be gaffed, or extra hands were needed on deck. Hell most of the passengers liked seeing the captain fishing. It meant he had confidence in the spot.

It sounded to me from your post that you were pretty confident that this wasn't an acceptable action from the crew. Next time you have a concern you should raise it with the Captain. you'd be surprised how much stuff can take place that he doesn't know about. Some are complicit in these activities but most see a full boat and return passengers and believe that everything is going well and everyone is happy... so happy the side money was great that day

Reputation? Hahaha. That’s the funniest thing ever. We all lost a chance of a reputation just by replying to one post let alone numerous post.

I was on the condor a few weeks back on a bft trip, galley cook came out, threw a bait and got bit immediately. He passed off the rod to a passenger, and went right back into the galley to prepare dinner.

At that point...I lost all faith in my ability.

IMO It's wrong to speculate on the boat. Three boats have been named in this thread and the only witness to this will not name the boat.

No clue what the cutting costs are. It was near $15/fish for larger fish a few years ago if I recall correctly, if its $25 so be it, or get a knife and handle yourself. I don't know what is going on on the boats, I go on them to avoid drama not find it, I guess a good day working is better than a bad day fishing now somehow.
