ive got a pair of mr3 islanders and love most everything about them with the exception of the line creep. I was able to hold one of the new tr3 today and it felt awesome and supposedly has fixed the line creep and is waaaaayyyyyy less maintenance and more durable. Any thoughts or experience from anyone on the new tr3?

I am looking to sell my 3 x MR3 and trade-up. The TR3 looks and feels great but at CAD$900 a pop not cheap!

The color of the TR3 is why I stayed with the MR3, if you are looking to spend that kind of cheddar, you. May consider a glance at the Abel Mooching reel, SICK SICK SICK

Has anyone else tried the graphite on the cork with grease to eliminate the line creep

Must say that as I become more used to my Avets the more I like them. Yes - the scream of an Islander MR3 or whatever is great when a fish takes line but when it does a 180 it is hard/impossible to keep up while the Avet does it with ease - and an Avet does not creep and you can buy three or four for the price of a couple of Islanders.

Solidly made in the USA the Avet is a bargain - and that's from me - a Brit living in Canada!

I've messed with the line creep a bit on these and have come to two conclusions.

    1. Don't over oil/graphite the cork. The less there the better.

    2. Live with the creep. It's really no big deal. Realistically, each time it creeps all the way around, it like an extra foot of line out, that makes no difference in how much "belly" is in your line if your fishing deeper than 100'. Just crank it back down every once in a while and use braid if your really concerned.

And I own accurates, avets, tekotas(shimano) and love them all for different fisheries but will admit the Islander mr3 is a blast for salmon.

Also I have used the Abel’s and they are very nice.... I found the thinner arrow gathers line on one side a bit but haven’t used them much

Those pancake reels remind me of a tweed wearing fly fisherman!
I'll stick with the USA! She hasn't let me down yet!

Two folks I know using the TR3 love it. I hoped they would have more color options, but it’s just the silver and red and then silver and blue sometime this year.

I’m excited to break the Abel in!

Make sure you give us a report of the Abel. Have been eyeing them for a couple years. Just can’t bring myself to upgrade my 3 MR3’s.

I know our brothers up North use them all the time, so that says something......I just prefer the ol' level winds.....not a good season unless I burn the shit out of my thumb at least once.

Agree with all of the above.
I do have one islander now that I got as a present from my wife but I have caught more fish on 49.99 Daiwa pancake reels paired to a 59.99 at the time shimano rod than most islanders will ever see and every one was a lot of fun!
If you haven’t tried knuckle busting it doesn’t have to be expensive to be fun!

When they go over the rail, they all lay on the bottom the same. :finger:

Nope not a diss at all, just an Edmonds joke when he was sitting on a chair chillin holding the same $3 dollar pliers I just won, and I paid 40.00 for raffle tickets, we were calling them “3 dollar” pliers. And he was flipping me shit cause he knows I have a plier fetish.
