Was originally scheduled to go on the Condor
Cancelled do not having enough passengers
Pricing difference was $60 but Islander included food package well worth it
Left the dock at 6pm and made it to the fishing grounds west of Ensenada after midnight About 2 o'clock a nice bite started on the flat falls at 250'
We were experimenting with the idea of using an electric reel for the flatball fishing
Struggled at first I postponed the experiment
Dropped in with my 100 pound rig on with a 30W 2 speed
Big advantage in controlling the 50 lb fish
I was able to keep the fish adjacent to the bow and stay away from all the guys in the back of the boat using their flat falls
Boated the fish in about 10 minutes
My girlfriend hooked up shortly after on a 50 pound sinker rig
Unfortunately the fish in it's death spiral collected a large quantity of deep flatfall rigs
Unfortunately the fish was lost
I'm open for suggestions on how to prevent this?
Day time fishing was typical Bluefin lots of show and little go
Later in the day the skipper moved west where we found catchable smaller fish
We ended short of limits but the boat limited out and we were given 4 fish at the dock
His water was very flat did the entire trip slightly off colour but very clean
Positive young crew very helpful great attitude
Was one of the cleaner boats I have been on
Definitely will reschedule on this one

Islander is a killer operation. Nice report!
Its tough when those fish are doing the death circles. Lots of maneuvering over and under guys next to you, watching the line and fish. Sometimes its just going to happen, especially with lines straight up and down.

Not trying to be "that guy" but those are 50lb fish? I have caught several that size (never weighed) had always assumed they were 25-30lbers.

Sounds like a great trip! Just a friendly fyi to be careful in mex waters with an electric reel even if your not using it they have different laws than us. You must be disabled and have written authorization from the ministry.

    I know a couple guys...

Didn't try too hard, did ya? 😜

Better to be "that guy" here... than being "that guy" on the Sporty.

    I'm terrible at estimating
But this time I sent the fish to 5 star for 2 hour processing
So I can verify the weights 44 51 And the 2 smaller ones were just under 20 pounds

Folk were jigging around a deep color tuna?
    Simple answer yes
    Non Simple answer
Fish was hooked on the Stern and work to the bow for about 15 minutes
Number of others were bit at the same time (deckhands were very busy)
    This was at 2:30 am
Fish was at very deep color and headed for the Stern again
Fish were being jigged at about 250'
My gf Fish wrapped about 5 flatfalls then another hooked Fish came into the cluster F
3 crew members tried to sort it but the braid destroyed the 50yds of mono Topshot
Hindsight I'm wondering if backing of the drag so it would have been a braid to braid tangle would possibly save the fish?

Saw a lot of the same on the legend this weekend. Smaller setups during a hot night bite on a crowded boat is asking for trouble, even irresponsible.

Fish a heavier setup. It brings in the fish quicker and gives you more abrasion resistance.

You can get away with heavy line size at night. If you are seeing people getting bit on 200lb leaders, then no reason to fish 50lb.

Save it for the day time when no one is getting bit and you have to finesse.
