I bought this last year and worrying myself crazy rn!! Is this is right for bluefins and yellowtails… I don’t have heavy mono or floro but plan on getting that at the landing before my trip and having them rig it properly for the big bft.. can I get away with just replacing the hooks on the flatfalls? Worst case scenario I sell all the irons.. thanks in advance.

Definitely getting pre rigged at fisherman’s landing before I head out just trying to limit how much stuff I need to get… so far I’m told 100# to 400# leader florocarbon , 12/0 to 14/0 owner mutu hooks 500lb solid hooks for big flatfalls, and split rings which I have in pic also have 800lb swivels.. longest trip this year is 3.5 days. Going on several trips this October most are 2 days to 3.5 days..

Lots of good advice here on how to rig all that stuff on. Read up and have at it, give you something to do plus you'll be more self sufficient once on the boat. Deck hands get pretty busy and may not be available when you need help. That's a lot of gear to get sorted at the landing too. Tackle prep is half the fun of going

It's all total junk Ted and as California laws state it's potentially cancer causing. I'll dispose of it all for you for only the price of a beer hehehe.

Bring it all in October if you have the room as you never know

You overthink everything. You have been talking about going for what seems like forever and ever. By the time you actually go, The bluefin will be gone and who knows what your going to be fishing for!!! Just F---ing go on a trip and go from their. Your probably wearing people out with your 10,000 questions.

I'm looking forward to reading your trip reports. Hope that you have a good time! The only things missing from your pictures, and you probably have them too, are (1) crimping pliers and crimps, (2) some 4 ounce and 6 ounce torpedo sinkers, and (3) some #32 rubber bands from the office supply store.

You are well equipped with lures, and you are going to get your heavy fluoro and re-hook your lures at the landing before your trip you said. But the trips that you are going on this fall are going to catch a lot of fish, probably most of the ones hooked, on live bait. You will crimp your 2/0 Mutu hooks to 80# fluoro leaders of at least three feet and then put a rubber band into the end of the sinker and loop it over your line at least a rod-length above the bait, and lower it down to the depth (usually 120 to 200+ feet) the school is at as the boat drifts. You won't use 90% of the lures in your pictures on any given trip. Bring them if you want to, I always bring at least 50 because I feel better having them along, but the vast majority never get wet.

And you of course will be bringing deck boots to protect your feet, a hat to protect your head from the sun, long-sleeved fishing shirts to protect your arms, and fishing gloves to protect your hands. I suggest that you buy and wear McDavid 6440 knee pads under your pants, pull them on as you dress and just wear them all day, they will save your knees when you are on the deck being beaten up by a big tuna as you use the rail. And a rod belt cup is very useful. I see a lot of guys just put the rod under their arm, but that is not using a rod the most effectively except the small amount of time when on your knee.

And remember that if you are coming from a state east of the Mississippi river, as you are, then California law requires that you tip everyone a minimum of 20%. It's part of the "Keep California Green" initiative.
