I just bought a VISX 50 and was able to load up 1,100 yards of solid 150# Power Pro and saw a good deal for sale for a 70 VIS. I need at least 1,000+ yards and 30# drag so I am wondering what the difference between VIS vs VISX beside the topless on VISX.

The main difference between VISX and VIS is that the VISX are designed to be "west coast style". The VISX models have topless frames, and a higher drag curve when compared in the same sizes.

Though some of (my silver 30) the vsx models are topless.

The "VSX" are a different generation [Gen5], than the VISX, which are "Gen6".
Any of the "X" models [for Extreme] were designed as West-Coast models.

As the reel sizes go up is there a point where there is a transition to prefer the "heavier" heavy frame reel??

All Internationals are "Heavy Frame".
In comparison, the "medium frame" TRQ40NLD2 and TRQ60LD2 are 50-60-80 pound reels.
If you want a pure 80 or an 80-100 reel go with the 12VISX or 16VISX, depending on the line capacity you want.

This doesn't really same much. It is nice that they are different generations, but what is the practical differences when you compare the two.

OP's original question is the difference between VIS and VISX.
Butcherboy then mixed up the "V" [5] and the "VI" [6] generations.

Thanks for the clarity. Figures I couldn't figure out that "V" would denote 5 and "VI" would denote 6......Are there any other letters or numbers that Penn consistently uses?

It's Roman numerals, they use them to show the generations. 1 is I, 2 is II, 3 is III, 4 is IV, 5 is V, 6 is VI, 7 is VII and so on..

There are several other common letters:
LH= left hand
LW= levelwind
L= aluminum spool
W= wide
N= narrow
XN= extra narrow
LD= lever drag
X= extreme [higher drag curve]
LC= line-counter
S= 2-speed [shift] in some cases this can also denote "silver" color, and some 2-speeds are just designated "2".
SD= star drag
HS= high speed [some older models just use "H"]
LE= limited edition [usually color]
LL= live-liner feature [spinning reels]
LC= long cast spool [spinning reels]
BLS= no bail [spinning reels]
SP= special purpose spool for wire line
In those models that have them, the "V", "VI", etc are "Roman Numerals ["5", "6", etc], and indicate the Generation of that reel series.

I had full sets of Talicas 16,20,25 and sold them for Mak16,20,25's. Made the decision to sell them off and now I'm happy with the Visx16,20,30

The VISX models typically have had higher drag ratings than the VIS models as well and as i understand it mostly related to different belville washer configuration.

I think the visa is an open face and the vis has a bar across the top
