I’m on this trip, I agree that June is probably the most “risky” timeframe. I was on a June 8 day on the Excel in the 90’s that was a STINKER. Just tough all around. I think I came home with 5 or 6 yellowtail.

A guy did catch a 75 pound yellow at the rocks, which was pretty amazing to see. On a 9/0, Dacron line, and a rod with a cod plate! Badass.

But…been on a bunch of fun trips too. And no matter what it’s better than working!

The bluefin fishery has kinda changed the equation for the better in regards to June trips. That option can really change the outcome.

June 8 day is a roll of the dice.
Been on a trip that came home with half a tank of firecracker yellows and 24 disappointed anglers.
Also been on a trip with everybody coming home with 40lb yellows. YF to 120, more than half the boat catching multiple wahoo and two days of the most incredible inshore fishing at Cedros on the way home.
Most trips that time of year are a jig fisherman’s wet dream. If alijos is going you’ll get plenty of yellowfin. If it’s not they’ll keep you busy elsewhere.
Haven’t been in over a decade, not sure the islands are still open or not.

What boats have you been on with everyone coming home with 40 lb Yellows?? I need to start booking those trips. I've been on the wrong boats, AIso wouldn't mind with a120lb YFT or two either.

Excel, royal Star or the Rooster mid 90s - mid aughts.
Everyone getting a shot at 40lb yellows is more like it, forgive the artistic license etc

Every years I do a mid to late July 8 day. That trip has alway been good. My 15 day trips I bounce around on the dates, Last one was in January, this year it will be mid November.
