We did some Major damage on the Wahoo during a pick bite using the JRI Surface Irons fishing down at the ridge recently on the Shogun. Myself, Bill Hindorff (aka Baller), and Al Yee were fishing the long Rod for two days in the zone with my favorite JRI 4’s in Mint/gold/white, Mint/white, and Mint/gold in single hook version, as well as JRI 2’s in Black/purple and Pink/silver (all can be found at Bob Sands Tackle).

Despite changing conditions and Wahoo behavior the JRI’s got bit consistantly. On day 1, we were the only boat, it was pick bite Wahoo fishing with all the traditional Wahoo stuff getting bit, but for me it was all about the JRI Surface Irons, often times the ‘Hoos preferred my jig even with bait, bombs, and a few raiders all around them (see Video).

Day 2 was altogether different. Five other boats joined the party and the Wahoo felt the pressure for sure. Not only were the Wahoo becoming increasingly boat shy but a big school of not so boat shy Yellowfin Tuna and Skipjack joined the party. Baits could not make it past the WO tuna bite and most traditional Wahoo bombs or jigs could not reach the Wahoo that were staying behind the YFT.

I stuck with the long Rod and again the JRI Surface Irons proved to be deadly on the now boat shy Wahoo. A long cast and steady retrieve was the winning ticket, and the prize was an exciting show of boils and blow ups on the surface as they chased, slashed, snapped, and hit the JRI Surface Irons.

The visuals were just INSANE!!!. Thats why the Surface Iron has definitely been my favorite way to fish the ‘Hoos for a couple of years now. On this trip I was fortunate enough to have a fellow angler get video of one of my Wahoos caught on the Jig. (Thanks again Matt) so I though I’d share. (See attachment at bottom of post). Enjoy!

I’m on the Excel next week as well. I’ve got a bunch of JRI 4’s including one wired up and with a single hook.

Definitely had a great year of throwing the Surface Iron with you my Brother. From Grouper in Bahia De Los Angeles to Wahoo at the Ridge all the way to San Clemente catching Yellowtail. Looking forward to doing it all over again next year Bro!

sooo, it looked like a slow wind in, is that right? Just to get the lure working and no faster? Also, which single hook did you put on and it it better than the treble?

Our 2016 Excel 10 day we mixed it up, my buddy Ed G and I put the wood to the skin on the 7X and the popper...would have killed for video of what of my popper fish. Seems that the fish "act" different after they eat the surface iron or the popper...staying up on top and crashing around!

Tested both single and stock trebles and caught fish on both. Personal preference I believe. I did have to slow down how I turn the Handle a bit on this stop due to several factors, I was using a high speed reel, and on anchor with current. Most important factor on how fast you retrieve your jig is your jig! It really helps to know your jigs and what speed is optimal for each one for best performance. Also, how your jig performs under certain conditions, current, no current, cross current, wind, swell, ect.

After watching wahoo attack and eat both the surface iron and bombs they attack and bite each very differently...
