I’ve been In touch with Saturn and they’ve used my pics on their sites and Instagram and I asked if they could kick me a discount code for a new boat and several people that are asking about them ready to buy and they left me on read…Awesome work! Have you sent any pictures of your great catches to Saturn, Garmin or Tohatsu? Maybe they will sponsor you some repair kits, more fish stencils (), or help to upgrade you equipment. Be safe out there!
Like Nate I’ve been searching for a sword for awhile now. I think this was my 7th trip. I did some exploratory runs in July and figured out how to drop my baits without tangling then started hitting it in September when I was able to do a drift for more than 4 hours.
Very first time out I hooked up on the drop. Big heavy fish that took drag but I was only on for 2 minutes or so and I think it was a thresher. But who knows.
On my 4th trip I hooked something that made the rod load but wasn’t putting up a fight until I got it to 200ft and it started acting like a fish, pulled a little drag and then was gone.
I switched to circles after that.
Had a few “hits” the other times out and got my bait torn up which kept me pushing on to get the hookup.
When I finally did hook up I thought it was a shark. It dogged me for about 10 minutes then finally shot up and was a quarter mile away when it broke surface so I couldn’t even see it.
It breached twice next to me and looked absolutely massive. Really got the adrenaline going but if you’ve watched my videos you know that just mean I might smile a little.
First attempt with the flying gaff I just pushed it into her and she took off… 2nd attempt I missed and 3rd stuck right behind the pec fin, she took off and took my buoy under for 30 seconds or so. When It popped up she came up about a minute later and laid sideways for me and I was able to “secure” her and then she proceeded to beat the hell out of me.
Eventually she wore out and Travis had pulled over to help me get her in the boat. I threw him the rope I ran through her gills and mouth and then she went ape shit again. We stabbed her in the head multiple times and it didn’t kill her. Eventually she calmed down and Travis lifted her head out of the water enough for me to get a hand in her gills and pull her in my boat.
Mission accomplished.
She went 215 at the scale.

Gotta clean up, re rig and get back to work. Winter is upon us and that means big fish!

Day time is a little different but same idea.Cudo's to you my fishing friend, that kind of catch makes you a fisherman for the ages.
Buy you a beer and hear that story some day... I will.
We fish for swords in Florida drifting North with the Gulf Stream starting 15+ miles off Miami in about 1200 feet with a rough rocky bottom, at night using a bait like a Cabillito (but we call them "gogs" short for goggle eyes). We put a deep depth waterproof light on the terminal tackle with the bait, #14 circle hook with wire or heavy mono, use a concrete block as a sinker tied in a loose loop just below the swivel with 20# test so once down at depth we can pull it off the tackle set up. We use milk jugs as floats with different color cyalumes in them and put out three or four lines at differing depths. We drift till we get to Palm Beach then pull out and go back for another run. Biggest one I ever caught was 260#. You see and hear about catches to 400#, once in a while we get one with orange meat we call a pumpkin. If you told me this story I would never would not believe that an angler could go out in SoCal waters, single handed in an inflatable and catch a sword. Mako, thresher, striper yes, but a swordfish WOW you go!
Now, go out and do it again...

About 15mpg.What kind of fuel economy do you get?
We forget there was a time when 14ft aluminum boats were fishing Cortez and the back side of SCI.Wow thats impressive. That is one long trip but epic that boat can make it.
FYI…I was one of those cool guys in the 80s and believe me there was no 14 ft aluminum skiffs on the backside of SCI or at the Cortez. If there was it was rare but I doubt it!We forget there was a time when 14ft aluminum boats were fishing Cortez and the back side of SCI.
People look at this as crazy because they’ve been spoiled with big center consoles and the idea you have to pay to get on a cattle boat to enjoy any of the local fishing.
Most of the guys that did the cool stuff back in the 80’s and 90’s are probably in a wheel chair or dead by now but the few that are left are not surprised by any of this. Go into a local tackle shop that’s been around more than 15 years and talk to the old guy in the back. You’ll be surprised at what you hear and learn.

I’m a marlin fisherman so dug casting to them on the surface. Caught one in 1 in 1976.
Congrats on your catch!
