Like Nate I’ve been searching for a sword for awhile now. I think this was my 7th trip. I did some exploratory runs in July and figured out how to drop my baits without tangling then started hitting it in September when I was able to do a drift for more than 4 hours.
Very first time out I hooked up on the drop. Big heavy fish that took drag but I was only on for 2 minutes or so and I think it was a thresher. But who knows.

On my 4th trip I hooked something that made the rod load but wasn’t putting up a fight until I got it to 200ft and it started acting like a fish, pulled a little drag and then was gone.

I switched to circles after that.

Had a few “hits” the other times out and got my bait torn up which kept me pushing on to get the hookup.

When I finally did hook up I thought it was a shark. It dogged me for about 10 minutes then finally shot up and was a quarter mile away when it broke surface so I couldn’t even see it.
It breached twice next to me and looked absolutely massive. Really got the adrenaline going but if you’ve watched my videos you know that just mean I might smile a little.
First attempt with the flying gaff I just pushed it into her and she took off… 2nd attempt I missed and 3rd stuck right behind the pec fin, she took off and took my buoy under for 30 seconds or so. When It popped up she came up about a minute later and laid sideways for me and I was able to “secure” her and then she proceeded to beat the hell out of me.
Eventually she wore out and Travis had pulled over to help me get her in the boat. I threw him the rope I ran through her gills and mouth and then she went ape shit again. We stabbed her in the head multiple times and it didn’t kill her. Eventually she calmed down and Travis lifted her head out of the water enough for me to get a hand in her gills and pull her in my boat.

    Mission accomplished.

She went 215 at the scale.

    Video:

Gotta clean up, re rig and get back to work. Winter is upon us and that means big fish!

I knew it wouldn't be long for you Low.

Glad you survived and put all the naysayers to shame.

    You are my new hero!

    Addition:
When I was young like you, Swordfish were not even in my though process, no information for targeting them. So glad you checked off one of the biggies from the bucket list. With the BF you caught earlier this year . . . no need for a boat.

Sick! Where's the gopro footage of the chaos?
I left it in the truck 😂
My drift wasn’t going as planned, I realized I left the camera and I spilled my drink all over me first thing this morning. I didn’t have high expectations.

I do have some footage that I’ll put together

holy crap. I've been part of two swords (so far) and it's always a uniquely spicy affair. to do it on your ass, in a boat that could tip/pop... that's really badass. good work.

In a Kayak? Some guys only wear BVDs when they break into a mansion with a hammer, evidently a few others Deep Drop in a Kayak. That is so crazy it puts you in with a special breed. Congratulations on an unbelievable feat and thanks for the report!

Video added. IT’s terrible quality on my end. Only playing in 380p.

    Huge Congrats!
Lots of good eats there for a long time with family Holidays coming up.
Was this in the Carlsbad Canyon or along the drop off 8 miles out front of Oceanside Golf Ball? I have been doing the same, but haven't located any DSL in either of the locations to drop down to. I did a couple of drops and drifted near canyon edges, but no bites.
I'm so glad to see a couple of local Swords showing-it seems kind of late this year for them to show up?

    NFIO?
    Keep going brother!

It was near Carlsbad but not in the canyon. I opted for a more gradual sloped area and there was a bunch of bird and bait activity up top early in the morning. She drug me north/east and almost back over the ledge into 500ish ft of water. Well away from where we started.

Don’t give up, you can fish the same area 9 times and not get a sniff but hookup on the 10th.

There’s no way to actively chase them and drop baits in front of them unless you have extremely powerful electronics and even then it’s no guarantee the fish you mark are going to bite.
