Well,
Just got back from our four day trip on the Independence out of San Diego. My buddies and I arrived into town with high hopes, but unfortunately the trip was a bust. We watched them unload some quality blue fin from the previous trip with limits for everyone between 30-150lbs. Once we were onboard and settled in the captain proceeded to inform us the weather had picked up and we would not be able to fish the same areas as before. The winds were forecast to be blowing 25mph with gusts to 35mph. He decided to give it a try for one day and off we went. We arrived at Tanner Bank by 9pm. Tried fishing all night and the next day. To say it was rough would be an understatement. I hooked up one fish which ended up being a nice 31.5lb yellowtail. My buddy hooked up at the same time and landed a 29lb yellowtail. The rest of the day was spent looking for fish with an occasional jig strike here and there. Once the weather picked up we headed down to San Clemente Island. Spent the rest of the trip in this area looking for yellowtail and tuna. It was a very slooooow pick with an occasional fish here and there. I think the total fish count for the boat was around 30 fish. I had one yellowtail and one yellow fin. I snapped the line on one tuna (likely a bad knot on my part), and I had a sea lion take one of my fish after getting caught up in a huge tangle. My buddy Sergio had just the one fish and my buddy Josh lost a fish on a troll strike. That was it for us.
The good news, my yellowtail was good enough for first place in the jackpot and $200. The better news, there was and Avet Hx two speed reel up for grabs to the largest fish caught on an Avet reel. I caught the yellowtail on an Sx 2 speed. So I took home that prize as well. Kind of helps lesson the sting a little. Oh well, guess that is fishing. The crew were great and the captain tried hard and burned a lot of fuel looking for fish, but it just wasn't meant to be on this trip.

Sergio, Josh, and I waiting to board with high hopes for this trip. Little did we know....
Sergio and I caught these two at the same time the first morning while still on the anchor.
My one yellow fin I caught. I saw them boil on the side of the boat, cast a sardine, and must have dropped it right on it's head. It was frustrating to see fish boil all around and not take the baits offered. Had to fish 20 to 25lb line to get bit.
Due to the weather outside pretty much all of the San Diego boats ended up south of San Clemente Island. Probably 15 or more boats around us that morning.
