Ilwaco tuna 8/1-8/3. Great to decent fishing.

The tuna are around in good numbers SW of the CR (45.20-46.10 x 125.10-40), the farther SW you go, the more fish there are.

We ran into a bunch of jumpers on 7/31 and put 40 in the boat with three VERY good fishermen (one guy got 10 on iron) and a couple of guys who are still learning.

We have had decent fishing on 8/2 and 3, and could have put up very good numbers with more experienced fishermen.

We have bee marking lots of fish and bait and once we get away from the full moon, things should pick up a bit.

The bite has been very late, like 3:30- Sunday we headed in at 3:30 and it went WFO right after we left.

The good news is that there appear to be a lot of fish headed north and fishing should be good off of the CR and WP by this weekend.

Hopefully the fish will move up and in, as burning 360 gallons of diesel a day means filling up every day.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mike. Nice to know there is still tuna in the ocean, even if they are that far away from our normal stomping grounds.

Getting the Boat put back together-again. Hope to see you on the water soon.
You too? I've just mounted the motors after a year and a half , with a lotta work on the boat while they're off. It'll be good to go, now that Shake & Bake has led them home...

Yesterday was more of the same, but a sloppy ocean and lots of wind made converting hard.

My captain is headed to the Astoria Canyon today, as Coleman has been doing good there.

Let's hope they moved up, as 80 mile runs get old real fast.

We went out in tandem on 8/1-8/2 and were prospecting a triangular zone of 45 55/125 - 45 19/125 13 - 45 46/124 54
200801-2.JPG

Started the troll in 61 degree water at the 125 line and each boat picked up 2 fish on the troll, then one on bait stop and that was it for the whole day.
Trolling until sunset was killer.

Overnighted and it was beautiful.
Shamrock in the Moonlight 200801.jpg

This was a first time for both boats and we'd been wanting to do it for years and it was quite the treat and made up for the few fish. And to wake up on the big blue lake was incredible.

20200802_060616.jpg

On 8/2 my boat hooked/lost 1 at the south edge of the zone we were working and tandem picked up another 3.
When we picked up we were in 62 degree water until @ 35 miles offshore. Amazing change in temps in just one day.
Wish we'd made it further south, but was still a great adventure. Covered 200nm with 28 engine hours and 70 gals of diesel.

holy fuck, you’re alive
It would appear that the reports of my demise are highly exaggerated. I've been preoccupied with other stuff. Seems it's time to get back in the swing.

More weird fishing today.

TONS of tuna and bait on sonar 15-25 feet down at 46.30 x 125.30.

Today was the most bait balls I have seen in my 16 years of tuna fishing.

It blew up for 1/2 hour from 1:30-2 and then died.

We put 13 on the deck before it died.

Mark Coleman clobbered them out of WP, putting 38 on the deck.

I can't wait for next week when the moon phases are better, when these fish pop it is going to be epic.

We ran from WP - bait at 5:15 and started at 46.31x125.14 around 8 am - triple on the troll - one boated at 10 am. Chased radio fish farther out and north - two more troll hookups - double and triple between 12:30 and 2:30 p. Never could get them excited about bait and iron. Ended with 5 on a nice ocean day, ran in from 70 out between 3:15 and 5:45 pm. Most hookups (not there were very many) were on this orange splashy things out to the side with small pink clones. Grade of 4 fish was very good (like the all were before 2017) and one peanut.

"orange splashy thing' bird teaser?

No - I run the bird straight out the back sometimes (not yesterday) - these guys run out to the sides nicely - positioned on the downhill front of the wake - there's a lefty and a righty.

I rigged mine with a loop of cord on front with swivel that goes to rod - loop of 200 lb mono on back with snap swivel - where clone on leader is attached. Reel the whole thing in like a worm and bobber when the tuna eats whatever is dragging behind the orange thingy. These make trolling 5 rods from a small boat easy - even if turns are pretty sharp

Looking to roll up this Friday for another try. Anyone got any news on how far out, my last run was 65 miles out and all I got was a fuel bill.
