Identification Please

Went fishing with my wife Saturday trying for a halibut. We didn't have any luck on the Halibut but did hook the shark in the attached picture. I didn't know what kind it was so we let it go. Anyone know what kind it is and if their good to eat? We where fishing north of Oceanside around the clam beds. The weather was beutiful but their wasn't enough wind to move the boat so it was hard to drift for Halibut. Later in the day we tried the barn kelp for several short Calico and one 16" keeper.

Sand shark would be my guess.

Edit: sand shark is a different name for the smooth hound isn't it?

I believe it is a smooth hound. It's a type of Dogfish.

Looks like a spinolli. Good call.

Gray smoothhound.
If caught in Northern California it would likely be a brown smoothhound
Not a spiny dogfish as there is no spine on 2nd dorsal.

it's a baby Great White... you can tell by the dorsal fin!

Definately a spiny dogfish the tail of a smoothhound is much more ridgid and thin. Plus theres spines...

Gray smooth hound. Wouldn't bother eating. Stick to the hali's.

Spiny Dogfish(Squalus acanthias). Spines on 1st and 2nd dorsal fins and anal fin not present. Caudal fin shaped differently than in Smoothhounds.

I think Greg's got it. Spiny Dogfish photos match this fish.
