I just ordered VISX 16 for my 100lb set.
Which rod is good with it? Please give me a advise!!
I’m going to use it for the bluefin big boys.

Also, anybody have experience with Phenix hollow braid line?

Centaur is a good choice. I’ll pair mine with a Calstar 775XH.

I asked the sales guy at Turner's the same question about the Phenix braid. He said alot of people had sudden break offs

I did the same with a 775xh. My 16 VISX took 660 yards of 100# izor solid. Just make sure you load it wth good tension.

On the rail.jpg I fished up to 28#s of drag on the Centaur and never felt bottomed out... lots of lift. I have about 640 yards of 100# hallow and then 80/100# top shot. The rod rating is 60-100. Probably a better 80 but I did not feel under powered with 100#... I also fished the UC Raptor and believe it tops out at 20/23#s of drag. Both my UC's are 7"' versions and I felt they gave me plenty of length to stay off the hull and being shorter aided in lift power for this old man. The 7'6" versions have the same specs and some prefer them..

I will say to double check the drag after your first good fight. Mine went from a repeated 29# to 32# after I landed one. I was pleasantly surprised to see such drag and left it there with still the amazing feeespool this reel possesses. Enjoy it

FWIW Either of those two rods is an excellent choice, I’m just a diehard Calstar guy.

It doesn’t move and it has not changed since the initial fight, I just noticed it because I did a pull after I put on a new topshot. It’s dead smooth and consistent now....only changed once.

Been thinking about getting the same reel. Currently a Calstar/Okuma fan but thinking about adding some Penn/UC to my quiver.
Wouldn't the Centaur be at the limit for 100#? I was thinking maybe the Viper would be better suited. Not trying to hyjack, your thread is relevant to my choices and I'm still new to the U/C world.
