I have a theory that this warmer weather pushed some butts up shallow. Any input from people who have fished here longer than me (longer than a year)?
Gonna go try the normal spots for a butt or two on Sunday around SD bay and nearshore. Has anyone tried for WSB lately? Might as well try if we’re already out there.

I like theories when it comes to Halibut!
Butts are always in the bays...the water is always warmer.
I don’t believe they give a crap about warmer weather, it’s about a rise in water temperature they respond to.
Once the water temp jumps, they’re going to start thinking of spawning and looking for the grunion towards the beach.
Of course, if you find a local squid bed...

I maybe mistaken....but I believe your theory is correct. BUT....I also believe that the smaller fish are the males in search of a mate. The much larger females are still in deeper water.... in the holes waiting for the right male to mate with. If you getting allot of shorts..... go 15 - 30 feet deeper. Good.luck.

smacked 3 keepers this morning at Catalina. Same beach. 10’ of water. 5 trips consecutive in the last 7 weeks. 2 keepers per trip- minimum. Same Beach, same spot. most have been males 23-27”. today’s i didn’t measure or weigh but i’m sure she was all of 18-20lbs. and it was a she.
last couple trips, water temp 58ish.
today 57.1 was the warmest. not a bit difference but since i had this in my notes.
backside of the full has and always has, produced more biters.
not sure this info helps but hope it does.

Same here in HB today I had 7 live smelt left over caught 4 fish. 2 big spotties released, 1 small halibut released and 1 legal halibut farmed :hali_parkutuli: going back for sunset usually the best time for the fishing bays and bridges...8-)
