Holy shit! That has got to be the rush of a lifetime. I was in the Navy for 20 years and probably have less time on the fkn water than you do.

    I hate you. :-)

Ali Good going on the fish!! This is a perfect example of persistence paying off. As I told you when we talked at the boat show last year, it took me 10 trips to catch one this way.. For those of you that think you are going to go out there, drop a bait down, and wind one in, bring good food and a interesting book, and a lot of patience! Don't be discouraged by a few unproductive trips, the end result makes it all worth while! John Kirkpatrick.

After posting my reply to Ali's accomplishment, I felt that i left something out.. After talking with him, I left coming away with the impression that he is one of the new guys in the business that is passionate about innovations that will make our sport better. My day has passed, hears to the younger guys carrying the torch.!!

As good as it gets. CONGRATS!

But why do the sport boats get bashed for doing what they have to, to get this fish in the boat and not the owner of BD...

    Go figure....

Wow. Thanks for all the kind words guys.

My feet haven’t touched the ground yet.

It was such as awesome experience to feed my family this fish I’ve dreamed about.

I showed my three year old nephew the bill and tail tonight and the look in his eye was priceless.

    That’s what it’s all about.

    Go get’um boys.

    Congratulations Ali

I just spooled up one of my 80's tonight. We're going to try to hand crank one with some highly motivated young guns aboard.
    - We'll pack lots of food, it might take awhile.

Hey Ali. Congrats. These things swim up to the surface pretty much every time when hooked deep drop. They will even fin with 15 lbs of lead hanging on them. If you want a better fight use a breakaway weight rig that releases when enough tension from a fish on. But that fish of yours was extra lazy or stupid till you woke him up. There are some real mean monsters out there. Like the 800# one that we got 5 years ago not far from where you got yours.

Also their nervous system is such that even without a head (couple shotgun 00 or slug rounds will do that) they will still live and go ape shit and try to swim away. Read once they have things like mini brains in their system that keep the body going longer then you would ever expect. Seen ones harpooned through back and belly (buttoned) swim all day pulling gear. Others barely pooned through a bit of skin but must have caught a blood vessel and they die quickly. I think these things need to bleed out enough to die. The tractor has to run out of oxygen. IMO the massive heart and super high efficient gills of Kings don't need the head to operate for quite a while. Been kings with head off from a Mako/GW found still swimming around. That is why they usually take off the tail first. No motor and stay away from the pointy end.

And I have torn some fish pretty much in half with regular gaff anywhere behind the collar. I would shoot for the very top of the head (rest is actually pretty soft) and low at pec fins for the heart. Or flying gaffs with lots of rope.
