I have 12 weeks before I can put weight on my leg. The sewed my meniscus back together and screwed two steel plates into my tibia . I wrote a kinda therapeutic detailed timeline catching up EJ Swanny in a conversation , I don't think I locked it. He can share it if he wants, I'm not quite ready to relive it again like that
Yeah, here is Dan's story, not great, but can recover from it. I know @goatram went through a similar ordeal a while back, maybe he can share his experience with Dan and give him some insight??? Maybe others can as well??? Be careful all, just one slip away from alot of pain and alot of time............

"Hey man, catching up with a bunch of folks to update them on my situation. On Labor Day after fishing I was cleaning up the MUGWUMP at dads house while he and my brother cleaned crab and filleted salmon. After turning off the engine for its flush I went to get down to unhook the flusher muffs and start scrubbing. I got over the transom to the swim step, got my right leg on the swim step ladder and went to put my left in the step stool below. That damn stool overturned and sent me head first to the ground with my right leg caught in the swinging ladder. That slowed me down enough that I didn't suffer more than a few bruises and pulled muscles in my upper body, but I really, really fucked up my leg.
My brother said he heard my scream of agony before I started screaming for help and he found me in a heap in the mud puddle below the outdrive with the flusher muffs spraying me down. I could feel the bones moving in my leg. Fortunately Swedish Edmonds is literally right across Hwy 99 from dads and they were able to get me to ER really fast. Swedish was great, no waiting room horror got me in the back fast, assessed me gave me one painkiller that wasn't enough because I asked them not to turn off my brain. Then they gave me morphine.....ummm wow. Never had THAT before. Still in agony but ready for xrays. When the techs start saying things like "wow", "that's definitely broken", " never saw that before " and "oh my god" right in front of you the sense of doom is crushing. When the Dr showed me a pic the knob of my tibia where it makes the lower half if my knee is sheared diagonally across down into my shin with a sharp point at the end. Didn't break the skin thank goodness.
The Dr there says they don't have the staff or facilities to help me so they are sending me off to Providence in Everett after they put a splint on me. The splint process was the WORST. I mean a bazillion times worse than breaking it was! I don't know why I didn't die right there except that morphine must be some sort of dark magic. I spent an awful, awful night at Providence getting cat scanned and waiting for my surgery. Apparently 31 surgeons and assistants worked on me for over 5 hours to put my shredded meniscus back together and install two stainless steel plates and a bunch of screws. One plate runs 2/3rds of the way down my shin and all of it is permanent.
I was just able to get around with a walker well enough to leave Providence yesterday, a week after I arrived. I lost a lot of blood during the surgery and was weak as a kitten. The Dr's were also very concerned about something called compartmentilization where extreme swelling cuts off the nerves and blood vessels so badly I was at serious risk of losing my foot and part of my leg! OMG. I can't put any weight on my bad leg for 12 weeks and I won't know my rehab schedule until after my follow up with a surgeon on the 21st. Basically the rest of coho season is gone, I literally shed tears over missing my beloved Edmonds Coho Derby SnoKing puts on, and came to the conclusion my meds were fucking with me too bad to even think I could be responsible with a firearm even if I could muster the physicality to be a road hunter in a passenger seat. I've shed tears over this too. Big fat crybaby, stupid meds. Stupid accident."

thanks Matt. I think spring razors might be my 1st goal. Though, if I don't get strong and mobile enough to raid the freezer and cook soon, the razors I dug this year might still be there by then.

Thanks for posting this Erik. One thing is coming clear as the news about my misfortune spreads; Somehow I have managed to meet and surround myself with a whole bunch of awesomely good people over the years. It's a blessing for sure and I am so glad you are all part of my world.

That's a horrible experience and I hope your recovery goes smoothly. The only thing I can offer as the spouse of an OR nurse is listen to your doctors and do the PT.

I can't imagine the trauma of that and I hope you're back in action soon enough. Be well man...

Dan I feel your pain. I have shattered both of my lower legs. In 2015 I had that Compartment Syndrome. My left leg did swell up. Almost lost it. Still suffer from nerve damage that fucks with me everyday. First time in "93" I didn't listen to the doc. Rebroke it the next year. In 15 I listened and I started to put weight on it 4 months later.

A long road to recover. I was out of work for 6 months. Right now is pain management for you. Don't chase the pain level. Once it stops being painful you will be able to kick the meds. Toroidal is the shizzle. Morphine is ok. Oxys are your home time meds.

Wish you luck in your recover. Providence kicked me to Harborview due to my shattered bones.

    Well, the brotherhood will love this conversation I had with my dad yesterday. We were discussing a shower chair and bathroom safety. I mentioned I didn't trust the 1976 installed shower tile's glue to hold up to one of those suction cup grab handles the occupational therapist at the hospital recommended. Dad agreed and said ;
" What you need is some sort of harness that goes around your waist and legs and bolts to the ceiling so you can hoist yourself up and down,"

"UHHHHHHH Dad are you seriously suggesting I put a sex swing in my shower?"

" Sex swing? What are you talking about? What's a sex swing?"

    I gently explain.

"Seriously? That's real? Your kidding. People do that?!?!?!???"

Yup dad they do .....they sure do :-)

    MSIR for pain.
    Fast pain relief, short duration.

MSIR = morphine sulphate immediate release.

The contin in oxycontin is short for continuous, or timed release.

If your pain is short lived, or transitory, it will allow you to use much less active ingredient.

    Get well soon.

Damn... best wishes on a speedy and complete recovery and glad you didn't lose the leg.

On the bright side, in the future you'll be able to tell when the barometric pressure is dropping and predict rain storms coming... don't ask me how I know that.

Damn, that’s horrific Dan. I’m sorry you are having to miss out on your annual traditions but will make one hell of a hunting camp story next year. Keep your chin up and pay attention to the pain level. Compartmental swelling can cause you some real grief, sane thing for pains in other parts of your body that are unusual can be blood clots so don’t be old school tough guy like we all tend to do. Heal up brother.

I've been trending nicely the last two days, I think. Don't have any previous experience with broken bones and surgery so.........????? Mostly off painkillers except for the pregabalin for nerve pain. Been off the oxy for over a week, haven't even had an ibuprofen in 24 hours. The line of staples running down my leg stings, but it feels mostly like flesh knitting back together. Sitting up without my leg elevated isn't an ordeal and I can just almost put an almost 90° bend on my knee already. Still a bit wobbly getting around the house on my walker and have nearly fallen down a half dozen times. Those were scary, I'll admit that.
Looking forward to my first follow up with the surgeon tomorrow , seeing my wounds where they filleted open my leg and getting a physical therapy schedule started.

Have you asked the Doc's if (with all the surgery) one leg will be shorter than the other??

Not the end of the world, just have to use inserts in one shoe.

Hell, you're recuperation seems to be going good (you strong like Ox). Maybe you can at least get up to deer camp for a night and tell lies over a scotch or whiskey. Good-Luck, we're rooting for you......

Strong like ox? More appropriately stubborn like asshole SOB I think.
I have been told I am a , or not to be a ' tough guy' a few times but I've never really thought of my self as a tough guy. Rather proud to have several lines of hearty pioneer stock in me......it's a sure bet I'll be crying my eyes out once the physical therapy starts!

Back from seeing the surgeon. Got my staples removed. Looked like I had a zipper running up and down each side of my leg. I can get it wet and start showering again in three days, which will be nice. No physical therapy schedule until the 12 weeks of no weight on my leg is up! Uhg. Just flexing and bending my knee to keep scar tissue from building up. I did get permission to try some crutches instead of my walker and my stairs at the house didn't ruin me today so bad.......I think I can get mobile enough to maybe get some work done soon!. Taping decals on spoons or doing some packaging I think.
