How much strength does some one need to be to land a cow?

Any opinions on how much strength someone needs to land a cow tuna?
Assuming technique and cardio are good.

I have a very petite female aunt who saw some of my PV trip pictures and decided she wanted to catch one of those.

Technique trumps strength. Your aunt should be able to land a cow using the rail. Is she cute?

Well, the angler needs to be able to put the rod on the rail, drop the rod slightly and reel down. If she can use her body weight to push down on the butt end and bend the rod, that’s pretty much the strength part. As the rod tip lifts the fish, she just has to be able to repeat that over and over for maybe half an hour.

I’ve been to PV multiple time with Marla’s Sportfishing. Being on the petite side shouldn’t be an issue with that crew. I landed a 270 in 20 minutes but I’ve never been accused of being petite!

I‘ve seen a skinny ass 15yr old land fish twice his weight. Your aunt might need some help shuffling the rail, either crew or you, but the reeling Itself shouldn’t be too bad, especially with appropriate rod and reel, including a good low gear.

The trickier parts are hooking the fish and the final few feet a gaff. Maybe just help her with that and let her take the brunt of the fight.

I used to fish with Jan Howard. She's weights maybe 110 pounds and has landed many Cows . On one of our trips, she landed the only two cows on the trip.

She uses a butt plate, harness, short custom wrapped rod, and does fine.

Msz B on a 164#. She is 75 , from her skull to her tailbone is about 75% titanium, 125# The lads all know her and have at it unless they see she needs help.

I don't think it's strength you need but more of an endurance thing. It depends on how long the fight is.

Taking a page from Jeff Burroughs excellent fishing book. To boost your self confidence begin a targeted exercise program that will strengthen your fishing muscles....back, shoulder, and reel grip/forearm.
Perhaps rig a set-up that lets you pull on a rod hooked to the bottom of a fence post or such for a few minutes everyday.

The reality is, no one, male or female needs to be a body builder to catch cow tuna. With the right gear and openness to coaching, almost anyone can do it... Here is a photo of Mia Pettie on her first day of long range fishing posing with her cow yellowfin tuna.. She was 14 at the time, and could not have weighed more than 100# ....

I agree with that. If she doesn't work out on a regular basis I would say start training about 3-4 months before your trip leaves working on both cardio and light weights.

Technique and endurance. Although strength helps allot. Strength can be guided in many ways

Get her on board if she is game.

I didn't fish LR for 11 years. While retaining my sea legs from inshore fishing, surfing, walking, riding bicycle. I drive less then 500 miles a year

Anyways, I have a very easy basic workout with small dumbells and COBBLESTONE for the fishing muscles and sea legs. Helped me allot. Will post later when I have time. The cobblestone is to rough up the palms

Take a 300lb muscle builder and they will be exhausted in 2 feet of whitewater for a surf lesson

The largest fish ever landed on the Red Rooster 3 was by a petite woman, Victoria Jones. 387 or something………..

My wife landed a 270 on the Vagabond a couple of years ago and she has no hand strength hardly at all and is in her mid sixties. Just use the rail and do what the deckhands say and you will be just fine.

Depends on how bad you want you’re ass kicked I’d say..
My opinion is go to the gym work on you’re arms/strength and above all stamina.. it’s nothing to be on these things for an hour or more…
It’s sure not gonna hurt!!
At least not as bad as that fish is gonna hurt you!!!
