Over the last 2 seasons I’ve taken 12 offshore trips out of SD, I only fish the all day boats, no over nights. Got a 110# on the Grande last November. They bluefin have made appearances on 3 offshore trips but only bit twice, I’m 1/2 so far.

I started chasing the local bluefin around 2015, doing 1.5 and 2.5 day trips twice a year, only caught fish in the 40# range on bait.
Every year I watched others catch big fish on jigs right next to me
and in August of 2018 it was my turn, I got my 200# bluefin on the flat fall jig.

Been fishing the salt for 30+ years, been on plenty of trips both local and offshore.

Never really made it a priority to chase the giants, but finally busted the century mark on the Tomahawk last October. 110#, on the flat fall, 60# test, HX Raptor.

I've taken large fish before getting bit by the Bluefin obsession, but back in 2009 I was on a 1.5 on the Islander and we had a school pop up and I got a pair of low 30's, my first Bluefin. So after that I was on the hunt, but was stuck in the 30's for a lot of years. Got a 45# on the Condor in 2015, and REALLY wanted to get a big one if at all possible.

I spent twelve days offshore specifically trying for a big Bluefin during fall 2015 to July of 2017, nothing bigger than 40#. My thirteenth day trying got a kite fish, 256.

Now I can resume the usual obsession, trying for a yellowtail over 40#, and give up the craziness.

Cowtown 2005. FishFest 05.

I hooked five and landed five. Totaled 1000# back at the dock.
Could have had ten more, if I wasn't in such bad shape.

One trip and I was done with big tuna.
Too danm much work to land them.
I'll stick to YT. They give up after five minutes.

Never even caught a bluefin tuna and holy Jesus don't know if I even have the right gear for that. Probably with my JX Raptors.

Never purposely hunted tuna that big. Just trying to catch anything whenever I go.
Mine came on an 800m 30# mxj. You will be fine

Coming from the East Coast....no tuna over #100 until I fished on the Excel.

First 16 day got me my #109 YFT

The next trip, a 10 day, got me my #134 BFT

Returning to cow hunt in February

My "secret"...LOTS of time on the rail....listen....learn....and sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good. Oh and lots of changing out lazy bait....

Gone but not forgotten
Charter trip many moons ago, specifically a go big or go home trip. Not everyone landed a fish. Three YFT landed over 200#. Very fortunate that mine went 203#, 2nd largest, Jamie was crowned king at 221# if I remember correctly.

Caught my cow, but not cow fever. Rather be catching 40# to 60# fish. That is just my preference. Fishing for cows can get obsessive, heck fishing is obsessive,

Mr first big tuna was out of Puerto Vallarta on the Maximus. I was a complete novice on this type of fishing. The 180# kicked my ass to the point it wasn't enjoyable. I learned alot watching others later, seeing how I was doing it all wrong. I said that was my last trip chasing big tuna.

So two years later I'm doing it again on the Apollo. Got a #140 and #180. This time a deckhand said it looked liked I knew what I was doing. I said this was my last trip.

One year later I'm back at it. Fishing with friends is the big pull for these trips. The boat got 2 fish, nothing by me. I said this is my last trip and I'm sticking to it.

All the trips were a lot of fun with friends with 2 of the 3 being good fishing, but I'm not into the big tuna thing I guess. I'm more into calico, cabrilla, and yellows. So this year it was to be Cedros. Looking forward to next year.

After a few unsuccessful trips I got the kite figured out last September since then I’ve traveled down from Norcal bringing my gear jumping on with a number of different boats maybe a dozen or 15 times(many overnights in skiffs)
25 or 30 kite fish, a few were under 100
I didn’t reel in all these fish but I hooked em and killed a good number of them

Shit, I have spent probably 16 to 20 days in big fish waters and never caught any over 100lb. Bad weather just seem to jinx me most of all or just couldn't get picked up on any thing bigger than 100lbs

Never...I don't chase those big fish. Every person I see pinned to the rail for 60 minutes with a monster hanging, barely being able to turn the handle... just re affirms my choice. My buddy got a #125 on the kite on an overnight. Capt called his number. He landed it and said it sucked...big time...lol. We didn't even know what to do with it. We gave it to the boat. We both had just bought big fish gear. We both promptly sold it after that trip. Obviously I'm the minority here. Just my 2 cents.

I'd rather catch 5 20 pound yellowtail on The jig versus 100 pound tuna personally
