How many of you are fishing your SX Raptors as a 40# setup?

I got the SX Raptor initially more as a 30# setup, but also recently picked a MXJ G2 which can serve as a 30# setup. Spoke to Avet and they recommended the SX Raptor to be used a 40# reel as a sweet spot. Anyone out there have it setup as a 40# outfit, and how do you like it? Bait setup or jigging also? Line capacity does not seem to be an issue, and drag ratings are there as well. I'd likely go 300 lbs of 50# braid tied to 40# mono topshot. Just curious to see how many have hooked into a 40# + fish and how the experience was.

I've fished an MXL Raptor as a #40 reel quite a bit and its worked very well for sub 50lb tuna, yellows and other inshore fish, but I got absolutely corn-holed on it by a 75lb yellowfin at Clemente, that fish was a devil, we thought it was easily a 100+ bluefin until we got to color. We got the fish, but it was a very prolonged battle and i found that the low-gear while it winched in stubborn 25lb yellows with ease was basically a high gear on good grade tuna. As long as you are aware of that, internally its up to the task.

Sometimes you just get corn-holed by a psycho tuna.

I use my SX Raptor with 30# but it could do 40# easily. There’s not that much difference between 30 and 40#.

I have the sxj raptor. Good for 40# except when targeting those big bluefins

My only concern about using an SX Raptor for 40# is if you use a 40# flouro top shot that is long enough to wrap around the spool. The spool diameter is small so you'll likely end up with a fairly kinky leader. If the top shot is short enough that it all fits in the rod, it should be fine.

I have been using 30ft top-shots of 35# Blackwater on my SX-Raptor for my last 6 trips (3-8 days). It has been used some on every trip. It always puts fish on the boat. Yellow-fin, Yellow Tail, Dodos and Wahoo have not been a problem. I don't think I pushed near it's limits yet.

Do you replace only the handle and use the stock knob and bearings? If not, the overall price increases to $35.00 plus shipping ($6.00)

Yes, just reuse stock knob. I've used an aftermarket on one handle,But really don't like it.

Yea I have one. I got it out of the box with a crushed bearing. Sent it back and got it back with some weird noise. Told it would go away but I'm going to take it to a local reel guy to get it looked at.
