Right boat, Captain and crew makes a huge difference. An interesting question would be, on what boat have you caught more than one 100 lb Tuna. I caught my first 100 lb plus Blue Fin on a flat fall on the Liberty in 2017, (170) and was lucky enough to see six cows all on at the same time on the American Angler, all six landed, I had two shots at a bast that night, farmed both. Next day, lost another at deep color the next day. Redemption on the New Lo Ann two eels later, a cow at 208.

Was around trip 5 on the Big X. Sundowner and was hooked up second, first fish landed was a 160lb (F U Troy!). Mine weighed in at 97 lbs. on the boat scale. Next drop with the same flat fall yielded a 147lb. Been chasing another 100+ since

I was very fortunate to get my first Pacific Bluefin (I can't count how many I caught in the Atlantic when I younger) over a 100 #'s the first year they showed up in decent numbers 2015. First attempt we got one that went 120 on a live mac (this was before anyone was skipping or fishing the kite) on 30# and an Avet MXL. Took 4 hours to land the thing.

I've caught a lot since then but that first one on that light gear is still my favorite.

10 years and 3 trips per year. Took 3 or 4 day trips on Vagabond; others were various great short range fleet boats. Got a 161# on 8/31/19 on the Top Gun 80 with an assist by Deckhand Nate. Kite fish with frozen ff. Was a 5.5 day trip, but we stayed local.

About 30 trips over 3 years. Different boats etc. First one came on the constitution In July and the next one on the tribute last year. Last stop of the night last drop after I gave up and then came back out and sent it.
Wild. Tough fish to target. But amazing when a cow comes over.
Heading out this weekend on a 2 day. Target.... super cow.

I caught this one in the late '90s - it was either the lucky 7 or my lucky hat - can't say for sure - lost the hat and haven't had seven since... best since were 80lbs spring 2019

Twenty months, four trips totaling twelve days, got to help pull on a couple but not my bite so didn't count. Fifth trip, thirteenth day, kite fishing on a 6-pack. We had all agreed before boarding that we would share any fish hooked, so I struck it and fought for five minutes as hard as I could, and tagged-out to the next guy. We each gave it several minutes as intensely as we could and handed over to the next in line. We each got a couple of rotations and it got struck with three gaffs and brought through the swim step opening, a fat 256. I ended up with about thirty pounds of prime bluefin.

Most expensive per-pound fish that I ever ate, but I got to check the list. And it is very interesting to me how much more relaxed I am about tuna fishing ever since. . .

Didn’t catch my first 100 lb. plus with my heaviest gear either. I had a Makaira Sea 16 on a Calstar 7400 XH, as well as an Avet HX 5/2 on the Calstar 7400 H (love this set up) both rigged up with Flat falls to 80 Flouro, to 80 mono to 100 Spectra on board that day. Had the HX in my hands when I got the first one over 100.
